Fun fact, late ports have been successful on other platforms (OG Wii included). For some reason Wii U is the only console where late ports can't find success.

Nintendo gave 3rd parties a console where core multiplats are struggling to succeed. You blame the games, I blame the audience. Which is fine, if Wii U fans primarily just want Nintendo games well they can look forward to more of that.

Lateness will always reduce sales, unless there are mitigating factors like the later version being far more desirable in some way.

If Wii U owners just didn't buy third party games full stop, LEGO City would not be approaching the million mark. Then again, that game wasn't a late, poor quality port.

Here's the thing, when you point to (arguably) successful 3rd party games on Wii U its generally exclusives. 3rd parties aren't going to give Wii U exclusives unless Nintendo wants to pay for them.

Doesn't mean that multiplats can't be successful though.

I just don't buy the idea that them being almost universally late, gimped, or niche had no bearing on their sales. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Granted, being late or somehow gimped is gonna hinder SOME potential sales. However, those same games would flop even with a little more polish.

Batman: AO released for Wii U on time with other versions and was even getting DLC. But it flopped so they didn't bother with the DLC. Injustice came to Wii U at the same time as other platforms but only sold 140K. Hence, these games are doing so shitty you can't just blame the 3rd parties. The Wii U audience simply doesn't want those games.

Meanwhile multiplat games like Rayman, Sonic Transformed, and Just Dance are doing okay. Certainly better than multiplat core games. So lets admit the obvious, the Wii U audience doesn't want core games unless they're exclusive because that forces core gamers to play them on Wii U.

I'm not placing all blame on third parties, I'm saying they share the blame.

As for Batman AO, it had the multiplayer removed and was a godawful port with a laundry list of technical problems. And I think our definitions of "core" differ, cos how is Rayman not a core game?

The only thing you can really blame 3rd parties for is not making the games Wii U owners want. But is it their job to cater to the Wii U audience? No, that isn't necessary when the Xbox and Playstation audience will buy their games instead. 3rd parties aren't beholden to the Wii U audinece.

I get the impression you feel a less polished port is by default a "godawful port." I don't think I can get behind that. I've played numerous games on 360 that were more polished on PS3. But I didn't consider them bad ports.

I don't consider the Rayman series core games and I feel its aimed at more casual audiences. With that said, its no surprise it did pretty well on Wii U.

Whole modes hacked off and a terrible framerate qualifies as a godawful port to me, and that's before we delve into the texture bugs and other graphical anomalies. Origins also released a few weeks later than the other versions in PAL.

With a few rare exceptions, third parties simply did not offer quality, timely mainstream products to Wii U owners.

And Rayman may be cute and cuddly, but I'd argue it's too difficult and offbeat to be a truly casual game. Being "core" is not defined by an M rating.

But the point still stands that incorporating Nintendo into an established third party franchise won't guarantee success

Minor integration vs major integration.

To futher show the difference, look at Tekken Tag Tournament 2 on Wii U.  Costumes are a minor Nintendo integration.  Now think of the upcoming Pokken Tournament.  That's a major Nintendo integration.  Which do you think will have greater lifetime sales (provided Pokken Tournament is released outside of arcades)?

I doubt that a lot of third parties will want to make installments in Nintendo franchises just to succeed. Its nice once in a while, but no third party can thrive on it.

Whole modes hacked off? You mean the bad multiplayer nobody liked? You think that would have given the Wii U version a significant sales boost?

As long as the campaign was intact and playable, its not a "godawful port." I bet most people didn't even touch the multiplayer or didn't play more than a couple games.

Games don't bomb because of bugs, relatively minor glitches or even frame dips. The average gamer doesn't care and many savvy gamers will still buy games knowing those issues. For the record, the Wii U version of Batman:AO didn't have screen tear while the PS360 versions did. I've read several other Wii U games had no screen tear while the PS360 version did. I wonder if that has something to do with the hardware.

Difficult games can appeal to casuals as well.

Yeah that's a hardware thing; Wii U has 32MB of EDRAM, which makes it easy to triple buffer and eliminate screen tearing.

Again, I just we'll just have to differ as I simply do not believe that lateness, niche appeal, and quality problems have no bearing on sales.
