On the second, I agree.

On the first though, I still routinely run into people who don't even know Wii U exists or that it's a new system, not just a Wii add-on. Their marketing has been terrible in this regard.

Yeah, there is definitely confusion about the Wii U. But Nintendo is to blame for that. They didn't do a good job at distinguishing Wii U from its predecessor. Hence, I have a lot to blame Nintendo for before I even blame 3rd parties for Wii U's failure.

Nintendo absolutely must take some of the blame. I just don't think they are solely responsible.

I'd argue Vita primarily just appeals to core gamers east and west.

Games like AC, Uncharted, and CoD did fairly well because that's the type of games the Vita audience wants. While some of those same IPs went ignored on Wii U because core console gamers don't want a Wii U.

So are you talking about the Average Consumer or the "Core" Gamer?

The average consumer doesn't have interest in Vita. Its in the realm of niche at this point.

Okay then, are we talking about the Wii U or the Vita?

They're fundamentally responsbile for the failure of Wii U.

Sony and MS don't just want 3rd party support, getting support is arguably their primary focus. Its gotten to the point they compete for advertising of multiplat games. They've been doing bundling of 3rd party games as well.

Nintendo's strategy has been a Mario game in every box and they get a niche exclusive on occasion. Nintendo did go to Sega for exclusive Sonic games and that was ultimately a terrible idea.

But Wii U has 3rd party games that were well reviewed. Maybe you're giving them less credit then they deserve?

And again, Nintendo didn't do enough to encourage 3rd party support. They left and Nintendo didn't seem to mind.

Well reviewed perhaps, but still almost all late (meaning people already had them on other systems) or gimped somehow. (So there was no reason to get them on Wii U if you had other options)

Did Nintendo give them an ideal platform to succeed on? No. But they didn't give them an impossible one either. Third parties can't entirely escape the blame for their own products underperforming.

Fun fact, late ports have been successful on other platforms (OG Wii included). For some reason Wii U is the only console where late ports can't find success.

Nintendo gave 3rd parties a console where core multiplats are struggling to succeed. You blame the games, I blame the audience. Which is fine, if Wii U fans primarily just want Nintendo games well they can look forward to more of that.

Lateness will always reduce sales, unless there are mitigating factors like the later version being far more desirable in some way.

If Wii U owners just didn't buy third party games full stop, LEGO City would not be approaching the million mark. Then again, that game wasn't a late, poor quality port.
