Did Nintendo give them an ideal platform to succeed on? No. But they didn't give them an impossible one either. Third parties can't entirely escape the blame for their own products underperforming.

Fun fact, late ports have been successful on other platforms (OG Wii included). For some reason Wii U is the only console where late ports can't find success.

Nintendo gave 3rd parties a console where core multiplats are struggling to succeed. You blame the games, I blame the audience. Which is fine, if Wii U fans primarily just want Nintendo games well they can look forward to more of that.

Lateness will always reduce sales, unless there are mitigating factors like the later version being far more desirable in some way.

If Wii U owners just didn't buy third party games full stop, LEGO City would not be approaching the million mark. Then again, that game wasn't a late, poor quality port.
