Sounds like a bad idea. That would hurt their rep pretty bad.
And i don't think they need it, overall i do believe Wii U will have a good run, even if it don't match wii sucess.

It's actually not unusual for the second year to be the peak of a Nintendo console. We all know the last year of a Nintendo console is generally a write off.

Nintendo's having a hard time with HD development and you're already talking about 4K and supporting 2 consoles. They don't have enough bandwith. |
Taking a game and upping the resolution/adding anti-aliasing is fairly easy provided you have a chipset that can actually do that. Sony/MS don't.
Nintendo worried about how they can make WiiU a success, not a successor to the WiiU.
WiiU can handle 1080p HD graphic..... that's all they need to compete with current Gen. Will games on WiiU look better then Xbox One and PS4.... No.
But the graphic gap is much closer than it was between the Wii vs PS3/Xbox 360. Cost of Creating AAA game is on the rise, I think when this new generation of consoles final hit its stride you'll see that many Developers will flock back to the WiiU were the cost of development of new IP is smaller or support the system with cheap port that will be sold with a 10$ discount.
When you put so much importance on graphical output like PS4 and Xbox One, 3rd Party developers that don't can't match the AAA in graphic will have to use other means suchs as Tablets, Smartphone and WiiU.
The future of the WiiU looks bright, I'd be suprise if they can reproduce the Wii sucess but they will sell well over 50 million units of the WiiU. Beside, the WiiU still as the price advantage over their competitior and will be the first console to hit the magical price tag of $200-250 were you can really tap in the casual market.
So please stop starting thread about WiiU Succesor or WiiU bundle without a gamepad, it's just not going to happen any time soon.
People tend to forget that Nintendo DID something like this in 2004. They just positioned it as a 3rd pillar. Only it really wasn't. See no reason they cant do similar things in the future. Nintendo is extremely unpredictable.

Wii U would still be there and still be getting the same games it would otherwise, Nintendo would simply have a different option to target people who don't want a Wii U because it's not giving them the Western third party content they want and doesn't measure up to the PS4/XB1. Just dropping support for the Wii U entirely would be unneccessary it could still be supported through 2016 or 2017. |
So they would have to deliver enough first party titles for three systems instead of two. Even the rest of third party support for the WiiU would instantly go away, the third party developers would focus their efforts on PS4 + XBO + PC + the new Nintendo console.

I've yet to see any idea from you that was valid or a good business decision in any way Wii U will be just fine. Looking at PS4X1 games atm, even they cant compete with PC so I don't see why Nintendo needs to. Games will get better looking as developers learn the console so it is not like what we see now is the limits of what it can do. |
In two years, the Wii-U will be four years old. That's the exact age the first Xbox was when it was replaced. How did that work out for MS? Pretty good?
It's not like a four year cycle hasn't been done before. I don't think it would hurt Nintendo at all this gen.
I'd be pissed but as long as they offered something for Wii U owners, as well as made it capable of matching or beating out PS4 and Xbox One, along with not starting out with a lame launch window release schedule as they did with the 3DS and Wii U then I'd be fine and eager to embrace it.
It's doable I guess.. 4 year lifespans are more common than people think. Pretty much every Sega console had a 4 year lifespan, and the original Xbox was also replaced after 4 years.
Is it really worth it to Nintendo though? Chasing 3rd party approval ended badly for the GameCube, so would things really change this time if they were to use that strategy again? I'm not so sure.
Moving forward, I think Nintendo consoles are going to be hamstringed by the need to include both a wii-mote and a tablet controller for backwards compatability. This would especially true for an early Wii U sucessor, as I (and other U owners) would be upset that we couldnt' play all of our games with out buying another controller. It wouldn't be the worst, but it would certainly need backwards compatability and the ability to transfer my Nintendo account. I do not think this machine could co-exist with the Wii U, as Nintendo doesn't haev the resources. Over all, I think it's a bad idea, Nintendo should probably look into a short life cycle for the Wii U if things don't pick up, but this is too short, and the 3DS should be able to carry the company as long as the Wii U has at least Gamecube-N64 sales.
