Forums - Nintendo - What If Nintendo Released A New Console In 2 Years?

The Wii U will have it's successor in 5 years, 2 years before the next Sony and MS consoles

My thoughts on this thread is:

We want Nintendo to make a profit and not to commit "harakiri"

Wii U will have a 5yr life cycle and probably carried on the back of the 3DS before we see the next Ninty console. 2 years is pre-mature so-to-speak.

It will send the wrong message to their consumers. Basically it will say that you only buy a console for a couple of years - which means the value of the console is reduced.

Nintedo does not generally try to compete technically, but with unique gameplay experiences and a focus on family entertainment. They don't need a new console for that, the Wii U is just fine.

Why does everything have to be tech this and high end that, games are what is important and the Wii U is plenty powerful enough to run decent looking games, heck people are still amazed with current gen graphics and we know Wii U is stronger that that (except those in denial). Good software sells hardware, hence the reason Wii U sales have risen from around 25k a week to around 65k. Its still not quite there yet but the signs are encouraging, i still believe the Wii U will do decently.

We learned from SEGA in the past that this strategy doesnt work.

That is a terrible idea. Wii U is powerful enough for decent visuals. With each console gen the leap in graphics will be less apparent, and it is questionable would it be the worth of increase in dev cost.

Nintendo should have a different approach - buy a boatload of new and fresh IP's and quality dev studios. Make their home and portable consoles the uber exclusive platform. Plus, gain indies support, which they are doing ATM. When they get to the point that they have a steady stream of various first party AAA titles with the 2 months periods, with lower profile titles filling the gap between, they will increase their chances of success.

So, basically, cut the 3rd party "support" alltogether and only depend on first party offerings. Wii U is the best example what N gets when lets their console to 3rd parties without strong first party opposition.

.

When the production of the WiiU MCM will get cheaper, they could think about packing it with a larger chunck of DDR3 or GDDR5 RAM and and an AMD APU, then they could sell it like a WiiU that can also run SteamOS (just like the Ps3 could originally run yellowdog).
It wouldn't be much cost effective but it would make happy some of the costumers who want to play 3rd party games.

Sure, if I was nintendo, I would just love to provide access to the most affordable gaming platform existant, while I'm primarly trying to sell hardware to gain money with first party software sales.

Nintendo consoles have didn't have any major 3rd party support, since when? 1994? I think it's pretty obvious to say people buy their consoles mainly for 1st party games. If there are people willing to buy a new console just for their games I doubt some 3rd party competition from SteamOS on their own platform would hurt them very much, on the contrary it would make the WiiU more appealing for costumers, leading to more harware sales and a larger userbase, and obviously a with a larger userbase you can sell more 1st party games.

In a nutshell, a console to appease third party developers. The ultimate recipe for success.

Unfortunately for you, this statement has already been proven wrong by the Wii lifetime sales, sorry...
