When the production of the WiiU MCM will get cheaper, they could think about packing it with a larger chunck of DDR3 or GDDR5 RAM and and an AMD APU, then they could sell it like a WiiU that can also run SteamOS (just like the Ps3 could originally run yellowdog).
It wouldn't be much cost effective but it would make happy some of the costumers who want to play 3rd party games.

Sure, if I was nintendo, I would just love to provide access to the most affordable gaming platform existant, while I'm primarly trying to sell hardware to gain money with first party software sales.

Nintendo consoles have didn't have any major 3rd party support, since when? 1994? I think it's pretty obvious to say people buy their consoles mainly for 1st party games. If there are people willing to buy a new console just for their games I doubt some 3rd party competition from SteamOS on their own platform would hurt them very much, on the contrary it would make the WiiU more appealing for costumers, leading to more harware sales and a larger userbase, and obviously a with a larger userbase you can sell more 1st party games.
