Also mark my words. If the new Mario Kart doesn't come with any hardware peripheral (even if it's just plastic) it will do MUCH worse than MK Wii (even if the WiiU gets a 100m userbase). The plastic wheel was the big reason why it was pirated much less in certain regions.

even if that's true (which I'm not sure...you know you didn't need to use the wheel right??? In fact it was better without it. Once the novelty wore off most people I know preferred just using the tilted wii mote minus the wheel or, better yet, the classic controller)...basically all nintendo need to do is release the wii u mariokart with some kind of add on and it will sell 30+ million (using your logic). I'm sure a company that seems to release a peripheral with every second game they make will have no problem with that.

You could easily see that in the Spain charts for example in the recent years.
Mario Kart Wii at #1 and no other Wii title in the top 10 or top 20, not even NSMBWii. You can't exactly recreate that wheel so games bundled with hardware do obviously better than games without them (even if they aren't necessary).
Pirating is huge all over Europe, so that would be the region with the biggest decrease.
And yes 30m+ is certainly possible if the userbase is ~100m by end of that gen and it comes with a peripheral.
That piece needs to have some appeal though. I don't think a second wheel would do it, as 33m already own one.

Eh, Skyward Sword didn't sell that great and it sounds like the next proper Zelda is a long, long ways out.

3D Mario generally sells less than 2D Mario.

Mario Kart will help.

Nintendo seems allergic to new franchises though.

1) I was referring to TP, which this new Zelda is probably going to resemble visually.

2) It still sells more than most PS exclusives and that was my point.

3) Mario Kart is not help, it's pure doom antidote. 33 million sold on the Wii, doomsayers shut up instantly.

4) Yeah, I agree. But it's besides the point and the New Monolith game should help with that.

i wanna put my hands on that codename: x game so baddddddd

I'm guessing it was a pretty good presentation then?

Pretty sensible of them to announce stuff earlier rather than save it all for E3, really. Might help in the short term.

That's because the Wii U is no Wii. The Wii had an extremely positive build-up until launch and thus could explode right away. You had people waiting five hours in line at E3 2006 to play the system. The kind of games Nintendo confirmed today were all present at E3 2006, so there was a lot of confidence in the system from the consumers' side. Wii U had an awful E3 2012 and at launch way too much weight was put on NSMBU and Nintendoland alone, because year 1 was a big unknown (Buying a system without knowing what the future holds? Not many people do that.). Not to mention that the Wii U costs $100 more than the Wii.

Nintendo messed up the build-up and launch of the Wii U spectacularly, so it's wrong to blame it on the launch games. You could exchange NSMBU with any other established IP and the result would have been the same or worse.

That's true that the build-up was missed, but the DS didn't have such a strong launch when NSMB came out in 2005.

I agree, I wouldn't blame the U's performance on NSMB, but I wouldn't say NSMB U is doom antidote like I expect Mario Kart to be. NSMB is kind of fatigued imho. Over the span of U's life it will sell very well, but as a launch booster it was not super effective. It was effective, but not 5m effective.

come on guys these games are nothing new! we all knew they were coming! a new nintendo console without mario kart, smash bros and zelda? i don't think so!

Why not? Mario Kart is a multiplayer game, so having a second wheel doesn't hurt.

personally I'm guessing there may be some kind of pad tilting/steering control for mk on wii u, so maybe nintendo will release a big 'spiffy' looking wheel or something that the pad can be inserted into (though my god it would be big and look ridiculous, and probably be totally unnecessary...again!)...if that's the case I'll probably stick with the pro controller.

Yoshi's game, MonolithSoft game, Wonderfull 101, Fire Emblem X Shin Megami Tensei, Bayonetta 2, Wind Waker remake (remastered graphics)....I think I'm forgetting something.

Can't you use the WiiU pad as a rectangular wheel ?

Lots of great titles announced. But nothing that will appeal outside of the Nintendo core.

So, yeah, still doomed.

That's another pointless comparison.

As for Mario Kart, we won't be able to draw a good comparison, because by the time it's released the Wii U will have received a price cut and have more than a launch library. Like I said in my previous post, any established IP would have led to the same or a worse result. Wii U doom was inevitable with the surrounding circumstances. Even with NSMBU and Mario Kart U both at launch, Nintendo wouldn't have hit their hardware forecasts for the fiscal year, because the known upcoming games were so few and the release schedule after launch so thin.

You're just saying it's pointless, but I specifically said that the DS didn't have huge buildup, like the U. So what is it in this case that makes it pointless, I'm all ears.

I agree that Mario Kart would have also struggled at U launch, also given the fact that MK 7 just came out on 3DS there would in parallel be some massive cannibalisation.

Wii Sports U would've done the trick, maybe. Long story short nothing would have done it, but my fatigue argument still applies by virtue of the fact that it released way too close to the last 2 entries.
