That piece needs to have some appeal though. I don't think a second wheel would do it, as 33m already own one.

Why not? Mario Kart is a multiplayer game, so having a second wheel doesn't hurt.

personally I'm guessing there may be some kind of pad tilting/steering control for mk on wii u, so maybe nintendo will release a big 'spiffy' looking wheel or something that the pad can be inserted into (though my god it would be big and look ridiculous, and probably be totally unnecessary...again!)...if that's the case I'll probably stick with the pro controller.
