Forums - Gaming - Dispelling the myth: The Wii market is (NOT) bigger than the HD twin market

So, what's your take?

News to me. 6 9.38%

I already knew. 58 90.63%

For years people have been blaming 3rd parties for choosing to make their market on the PS3 and the 360 platforms rather than the obvious gen leader, the Wii.

However, let's take a ride on numbers lane.

and global:

So, it would seem like the HD twin market, which buys very different games than the Wii market, was the bigger market all gen long.

Go figure.

FAQ because questions are being repeated in the thread. Knowledge is power, the more you know:

Question 1 - Why combine the twins against 1 console? It's biased!

HD twins!? wtf, i though Xbox360 and Ps3 are considered to be two different products!?

who said that Wii leads them both combined?

I've explained this many times in the thread. You guys should understand what this is meant to show.

The twins together make up a market that the Wii does not have access to, as we know from the sales power of the multi-plats of top quality on all 3 platforms.

In the thread, we're debating why that is so, it's not even a question as to it being that way, but more as to why.

Question 2 - Why not just say it never reached 50%!

You could've saved some time and simply reminded everyone that the Wii never hit 50% marketshare. That is exactly what you were pointing out, and it's a well-known fact.

I already explained this a few times in the thread, the curve was there to show the progression throughought, whether close to 50% or not, and at what point. More info never killed anyone.

If I show people that it's never hit 50%, or if I tell them as you prescribe, which is more effective in proving a point?

Question 3 - Does this mean that MS and Sony won against Nintendo?

runqvist said:
So ms and sony won in both sales and games categories. Maybe this is the way of next gen, too.

Nope, that's not the point.

It's not that MS and Sony won, it's that Nintendo lost that market. It's essentially what Nintendo didn't get.

Why does it have to be either or?

That's a good point.

Cool beans.

Everyone already knows, there's no point making these threads my man! ;)

too bad the HD twins will only continue to sell millions upon millions of more units than Wii in the next 2 years..

Sony and MS should be sooo grateful that both exist in the market.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Who ever argued the HD twins combined were a smaller market than Wii?

It should never of being a competition between them. COD proves the games (mostly all) could of been down-ported and still provided a great game. Devs and Publishers simply didn't think they'd have good returns on that investment of a down-ported engine. Again, I think CODs 1m+ with each iteration on Wii proves that idea wrong too.

I would never of bought a PS3 had they down-ported AC, Batman, RE5 and a few other 3rd party games.

The HD twins had a year headstart, this is what killed the Wii.

Nintendo's a quick learner however looking at WiiU

Ummmmmm... ok? I think we've known this for quite some time. Regardless, developers are still missing out on a huge chunk of revenue by ignoring the Wii.

those games you listed cant be downported, so lets be real.

OT fact is those PS360 players simply buy more games, than your person who just wants to dance and exercise. Thats just common sense. You can throw the COD crowd in their as well, most of those players are fine just playing COD. I know some people like that myself
