Forums - Gaming - Dispelling the myth: The Wii market is (NOT) bigger than the HD twin market

So, what's your take?

News to me. 6 9.38%

I already knew. 58 90.63%

Total:64

It's worth noting that at least one of the HD twins has a considerable "casual" audience at this point.

It'd probably be a safe bet to gather sales of all GPU's that could produce on-par graphics to the Wii or higher. Of course, that's a lot of GPU's to count, and a lot of missing sales information you won't be able to find (unless you dig really deep and get lucky).

^ But that's not my problem. Show me the sales!

What about getting the sales of games that were made with graphics hard to downport to Wii, where graphics matter. (shooters esp.)

JWein, where did you get the 2/3 figure from, PS3 and 360 remodels?

Sure. Digital and physical. How do we include F2P games? Measuring MAU of F2P titles is quite a different metric than using sales. Hmm.. You could find the conversion rate for F2P games (the conversion rate of players who pay) and add that number with units sold across other titles.

But wait, that gives us software totals, not install-base totals.

HD twins in market VS single Wii .. It's news to me that MS and Sony share some money between them.

Let's split then in 2 to see the true results of what console has more base in US.. nhaw we don't need to do that to know the results.

So the reason of putting them together is not rooted in any kind of fanboyism or random measure. The purpose was to compare the importance of the non-Wii market against the Wii market, and see if 3rd parties had a reason to pursue it.

Who ever argued the HD twins combined were a smaller market than Wii?

It should never of being a competition between them. COD proves the games (mostly all) could of been down-ported and still provided a great game. Devs and Publishers simply didn't think they'd have good returns on that investment of a down-ported engine. Again, I think CODs 1m+ with each iteration on Wii proves that idea wrong too.

I would never of bought a PS3 had they down-ported AC, Batman, RE5 and a few other 3rd party games.

those games you listed cant be downported, so lets be real.

OT fact is those PS360 players simply buy more games, than your person who just wants to dance and exercise. Thats just common sense. You can throw the COD crowd in their as well, most of those players are fine just playing COD. I know some people like that myself

Why not? COD are the same games in their down-ports with the exception of lower visuals and lower online multiplayer.

I don't see any reason they couldn't have done the same to those other games. The only potential issue is AC's large overworlds. However there are AC games on nonPS360s.

I really think it comes down to the cost to redo visuals and create an engine to do so. I could be done and the game would mostly have only suffered in terms of visuals.

Unfortunately it wasn't ever tried and all we got were games made from last gen engines slightly tweaked. Kinda why only Nintendo made games really pushed the visuals and overall hardware.

lower visuals, try pop in, and other glitches and if you dont think people notice that, you're not giving them enough credit and as i have said before. COD doesnt tax the PS360/PC not even close, try getting something like Killzone or even Halo on WIi and then talk to me. COD is one of the lowest common denomintors.

AC LMAO, all those games arent even real AC games, hell the last one on DS was a damn platformer! Have you played those games? I have, they range from terrible to mediocore.

Yes it was tried, your not paying attention, look at all those mulitplat games that did go on Wii and tell me how they fared. Matter of fact, would you have really stuck to Wii? Cause those games you wanted would have sucked on WIi just like most multiplat games, it couldnt even run Dead Rising properly.

Oni, I need your expert advise. Can you name me an early core Wii+HD multiplat that was as high quality on Wii as it was on HD, and then one that came out towards the end of the gen?

Superchunk, time to dispel the second aspect of your self-fulfilling prophecy theory.

You mentioned that the HD market sustains sales of core games because 3rd parties created that market.

Now look at two games that cater to that market, one that came out on Wii, the other that came out on the twins. We would expect the launch-window sales to rival the launch-window sales of core market games on other platforms. In this case, let's compare Red Steel to Gears of War.

One ended up selling .5million, the other sold roughly 6m. I'll let you guess which sold what on which platform.

Fast forward a few years.

If your theory were true, here is what I would expect of their sequels. Red Steel stays flat while Gears goes radically up.

Instead, both stay at the same levels. This happens also with Assassin's Creed vs No More Heroes.

Red Steel and Gears are vastly different by a lot of things and simply put, Gears is a far better game. Gears was the single best game on 360 at the time and RS was known to suck right off the bat and overshadowed by ZeldaTP among many other quality games.

I don't see how their sequels prove or deny my theory. They are sequels to greatly different games in terms of style, quality and so on.

Really, its painfully obvious Wii's surge died off as it became apparent large 3rd party games were not coming (late 2009). COD shows core games would have made good ROI if down-ported in a manner that presented the same game with lower visuals and even some lower content such as multiplayer features. I think its a very good argument to make that had other big games done the same in 2007, 2008 and so one, Wii would have continued past 50% market share as many users would have considered them good enough to not purchase a 2nd system.

But it doesn't really matter. It can't be proven either way as we only have one high end 3rd party game to use as an example, COD and that started to happen after the damage had already been done and the core market on Wii was already buying PS360s.

Are you referring to BO on Wii which features online play?

@FOX. Indeed, I'm glad you pointed it out.

Dead Rising on Wii, that is what happens when you try downport a HD console game that makes real use of the system.

Chop 'Til You Drop was a remake, built on the RE4Wii engine. Tose pretty much did a search and replace, then called it a day.

I'm referring to all the CODs on Wii as that was the only game that actually tried... especially after its own engines were greatly imporved with ModernWarfare and Treyarch proved that level of game could be put on Wii with no loss of gameplay (aside of multiplayer options/feature), just visuals.

It is the only well-received, main stream, high-quality 3rd party game that has done this. None of the rest even attempted to do so and the result was a starved core market on Wii that by 2008/9 had probably already started buying PS360s.
