Worldwide Hardware Estimates for January 2023

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console worldwide with 1,257,932 units sold for January 2023, according to VGChartz estimates. The PlayStation 5 has now sold an estimated 31.77 million units lifetime worldwide.
The Nintendo Switch sold an estimated 1,140,489 units to bring its lifetime sales to 121.83 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 456,921 units to bring their lifetime sales to 20.68 million units. The PlayStation 4 sold an estimated 14,760 units to bring its lifetime sales to 117.07 million units.
PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2016 are up by nearly 446,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are up by over 170,000 units. PS4 sold 812,262 units for the month of January 2016 and Xbox One sales were at 286,735 units.
PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are up by 549,233 (77.5%). Nintendo Switch sales are down by 187,998 units (-14.2%) and Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 148,629 units (-24.5%). The PlayStation 4 is down 56,474 units (-79.3%) year-over-year.
Looking at sales month-on-month, the PlayStation 5 sales are down by over 1.84 million units, Nintendo Switch sales are down by over 2.95 million units, and Xbox Series X|S sales are down by over 1.22 million units. It should be noted this is comparing January 2023 estimates to December 2022 estimates, the biggest sales month of the year.

Europe Hardware Estimates for January 2023

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console in Europe with 406,910 units sold for January 2023, according to VGChartz estimates. The PlayStation 5 has now sold an estimated 9.83 million units lifetime in Europe.
The Nintendo Switch sold an estimated 336,316 units to bring its lifetime sales to 31.09 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 100,121 units to bring their lifetime sales to 5.53 million units. The PlayStation 4 sold an estimated 3,225 units to bring its lifetime sales to 45.93 million units.
PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2016 are up by over 50,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by over 5,000 units. PS4 sold 356,732 units for the month of January 2016 and Xbox One sales were at 105,202 units.
PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are up by 247,080 (154.6%). Nintendo Switch sales are down by 30,560 units (-8.3%) and Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 33,859 units (-25.3%). The PlayStation 4 is down 26,621 units (-89.2%) year-over-year.
Looking at sales month-on-month, the PlayStation 5 sales are down by over 342,000 units, Nintendo Switch sales are down by over 830,000 units, and Xbox Series X|S sales are down by over 343,000 units. It should be noted this is comparing January 2023 estimates to December 2022 estimates, the biggest sales month of the year.

The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console in the Americas (USA, Canada, & Latin America) with 493,793 units sold for January 2023, according to VGChartz estimates. The PlayStation 5 has now sold an estimated 14.59 million units lifetime in the Americas
The Nintendo Switch sold an estimated 331,728 units to bring its lifetime sales to 47.12 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 309,620 units to bring their lifetime sales to 11.95 million units. The PlayStation 4 sold an estimated 4,380 units to bring its lifetime sales to 41.64 million units.
PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2016 are up by over 236,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same week for the Xbox One are up by over 156,000 units. PS4 sold 257,453 units for the month of January 2016 and Xbox One sales were at 153,485 units.
PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are up by 77,051 (18.5%). Nintendo Switch sales are up by 10,647 units (3.3%) and Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 72,306 units (-18.9%). The PlayStation 4 is down 28,492 units (-86.7%) year-over-year.
Looking at sales month-on-month, the PlayStation 5 sales are down by 1.11 million units, Nintendo Switch sales are down by 1.33 million units, and Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 0.84 million units.

The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console in Japan with 314,443 units sold for January 2023, according to VGChartz estimates. The Switch has now sold an estimated 28.20 million units lifetime.
The PlayStation 5 sold an estimated 188,198 units to bring its lifetime sales to 2.61 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 4,287 units to bring their lifetime sales to 0.41 million units. The PlayStation 4 sold an estimated 6,697 units.
PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2015 are up by over 67,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same week for the Xbox One are up by nearly 4,000 units. PS4 sold 121,064 units for the month of January 2016 and Xbox One sales were at 519 units.
PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are up by 121,160 (180.7%). Nintendo Switch sales are down by 97,698 units (-23.7%) and Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 2,610 units (-37.8%). The PlayStation 4 is up 6,640 units (11,649.1%) year-over-year.
Looking at sales month-on-month, the PlayStation 5 sales are down by over 44,000 units, Nintendo Switch sales are down by over 446,000 units, and Xbox Series X|S sales are down by nearly 2,000 units.
