Forums - Sony - ITS OVER Sony Interactive Entertainment to end physical game disc production in January 2028

All I have to say is they better bring more Sony games to PC again.
PS6 will likely have no disc drive, even as an add-on for physical PS4 and PS5 games.
I say without exaggeration that I will very like skip PS6 given its likely high cost and likely lack of support of any physical games. Just get a PC at that point or maybe even Helix if it has Steam and at least in addition to the Xbox storefront.
This is such a massive scumbag move, and I have no idea why Sony is announcing it this far in advance.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 159 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million, then 161 million)

PS5: 116 million (was 105 million, then 115 million, then 122 million)

Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

That likely means even Xbox is losing discs, Sony is stoping BD production, who will other companies buy BDs from to release their discs?

Boutique labels such as Limited Run Games, which I'm not really all that fond of to begin with, are pretty screwed.

Sure they'll still be able to make games on Nintendo platforms, but that's a HUGE chunk of business they'll be losing out on.

I don't think Limited run makes their own BDs, the likelyhood of Sony being their BD supplier is huge.

Because people forget and accept eventually.

Also must surely have something to do with the unprecedent success of GTA VI being digital only.

Good. About damn time. The digital to Phyiscal ratio on PlayStation has been 4 to 1 for about a few years now.
Microsoft must be salivating now that Sony has taken all the bad press and they can follow suit.
Steam had this since their inception and no one bats an eye.
And for those that are crying about this, You must be glad that it took them this long to go fully digital.

If microsoft were smart theyd go big on physical. They wouldnt even need exclusives anymore. Theyd get a nice chunk of marketshare back. They might even sell more than sony for once.

Quick, spam Asha's SoMe accounts with that idea, if we are lucky, she'll take the bait!!!

Nah, not going to happen (even though one can dream). Microsoft is very happy with the all digital future.

Exactly. They'll be limited to only Nintendo platforms, which I have to imagine is somewhere around 50% of their business.

For anyone who btw thinks this is great because going all digital it means the psn store will be like steam with insane deals.
Ha

Hahahaha
AHAHAHHAHAHAHAAHAH
100 to 120 dollar games incoming mark my words.
Enjoy it!

Honestly, even Steam is trash. They ask $20 for Arkham Asylum and then put it "on sale" a few times a year. Meanwhile I can just buy an old PS3 copy for $5. And Steam allows Denuvo.

Not sure what Arkham Asylum's price has to do with Valve, it's publisher's price. Bought Arkham Collection (Asylum, City, Knight) last year for 9 euros on sale.

Yeah, having an N64 avatar clearly means I agree with EVERYTHING Nintendo does.

Or maybe it means I had finished my N64 collection and wanted to celebrate? https://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread/249883/update-just-finished-my-n64-collection/

Or SNY is trying to bait MS into following suit and announcing or moving forward with fully digital next gen XB.

SNY could fully intend to have PS6 be no different than PS5 with physical media, and in a year from now, if MS took the bait so they'd be locked in next gen, SNY could backtrack publicly and would easily get forgiven prior to next gens launch.

SNY was going to have a camera for PS4, remember. They ended up deciding against it, or perhaps never intended to bundle it with the launch console.

PS1   - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.

PS2  - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.

PS3   - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.

PS4   - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PRO  -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

PRO  -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.
