Good. About damn time. The digital to Phyiscal ratio on PlayStation has been 4 to 1 for about a few years now.
Microsoft must be salivating now that Sony has taken all the bad press and they can follow suit.
Steam had this since their inception and no one bats an eye.
And for those that are crying about this, You must be glad that it took them this long to go fully digital.

Keep sucking, steam is not a savior, sony is not your friend.

You will own nothing and be happy

Though they do mention still getting games from retailers. I wonder if this is simply the code in a box situation, or something else a little different.

"Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only."

Yeah, code in the box.

I hope we at least still get Collector's Editions, which were ironically already game codes only for several years now lol

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

Good. Less boomer shit in the world the better.

You're likely right based on Phil's path, but if Asha and MS really wanted to revive XB as they've said they'd like to, and return (the brands image) to a time when things were much better for XB, now would be a superb time to take this:

and throw it right back in SNY's face. Literally make the same video with XB top brass and title it the same.

It wouldn't work, though. It's a very different market compared to 13 years ago.

Hell, we even had a physical GTA5 PC edition back then. Imagine that.

I'm not so sure. The way the world is going, where everything is becoming a rental or subscription, more and more people are starting to get upset and want to return to full physical ownership. There's a reason why so many people don't like what's going on with AI and some are red hot mad about it.

XB has clearly seen GP isn't going to work like they'd hoped, or their exclusive direction. They've somewhat backtracked on exclusives, and might continue further. Plus recent leaks say GP is either going to become much less valuable to subscribers, or that it's going away entirely.

I don't see why XB couldn't pivot, once again, and pull another 180, by sticking with physical media.

PS1   - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.

PS2  - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.

PS3   - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.

PS4   - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PRO  -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

PRO  -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.

Physical have always been a sort of back-up even if one buys digital. The fact that it is possible to buy a game or movie on a physical disk makes that game or movie available even when the servers close or the license right is re-negotiated or a library is bought.

With the option completely gone there will be an economic incentive to simple "refresh" the access to the digital game library in order to make people buy it again. Without the backup of physical media the number of re-buys increases a lot when ones favorite game is no longer playable for some arbitrary reason.

Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z were the generations that grew up on physical games. Not boomers. Also, if right to ownership is a "Boomer" idea I bet things like clean water and air must also be "Boomer Ideas" to you.

Honestly, even Steam is trash. They ask $20 for Arkham Asylum and then put it "on sale" a few times a year. Meanwhile I can just buy an old PS3 copy for $5. And Steam allows Denuvo.

Well thats one less thing to worry about i guess.

If microsoft were smart theyd go big on physical. They wouldnt even need exclusives anymore. Theyd get a nice chunk of marketshare back. They might even sell more than sony for once.
