Forums - Sony - ITS OVER Sony Interactive Entertainment to end physical game disc production in January 2028

Timing is interesting too. It's exactly a year and a half away to the day. Sony's been planning this for a while. You don't make an industry shaking decision like this based on a single games pre-orders.

Xbox physical is obviously dead because that's who they were buying discs from lol.

I have 75K in videogames. Spent the last decade going hard on retro game collecting. And now I couldn't be more proud because as far as I'm concerned I'm way way way ahead of the curve. People just like owning physical tangible objects and with the death of physical games on Playstation people are going to flock to Nintendo and Retro stuff. Prices are likely to rise in the retro market by another 10%-20% after both Sony and Xbox cut out all physical disks. A similar effect happened to NES, SNES, and N64 carts when Nintendo cut out the Virtual console support. People couldn't buy digital copies of old favorites anymore and gradually over a decade games like Super Metroid went from $10 to $80 a copy.

How we get from this:

Physical disc production ending in January 2028 for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles  – PlayStation.Blog

Is this...

PS1   - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.

PS2  - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.

PS3   - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.

PS4   - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PRO  -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.

PS5   - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

PRO  -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.

I'm SHOCKED Sony announced this before Microsoft did. Microsoft will likely follow suit rather quickly. Especially when a much higher percent of Xbox Series consoles are digital compared to PS5. I believe in the US it is over 50% digital only (no disc drive) for Xbox Series consoles and around 25% for PS5.

You're likely right based on Phil's path, but if Asha and MS really wanted to revive XB as they've said they'd like to, and return (the brands image) to a time when things were much better for XB, now would be a superb time to take this:

and throw it right back in SNY's face. Literally make the same video with XB top brass and title it the same.

Sadly I really don't see anything like that happening, as MS/XB is probably celebrating right now.

I wonder if Sony will release a separate disc drive for PS6 for those with a large disc collection of games, movies, and TV shows.

That it would only have an optional disk drive was always the rumour. I'm also wondering if that is still the case and will just be for BC and Media purposes or if that's cancelled.

I'm sure it'll exist as an add on, and you know it'll end up far more expensive than it is right now, and not just because of inflation either.

Based on the way SNY designs their hardware, I'm also going to guess there's a high probability that it attaches on the side of the console just like a PS5, leaving a 'bulge', or it'll be a separate portable type USB plug in optical drive, like a portable USB storage drive.

It sucks for people who love to have a physical library.
I have right now PS5 Slim Digital, PC and a Switch 2. I only buy digital games so it changes nothing for me.

That would be a big win for Xbox if they decide to keep physical game discs going into the next-generation. But even with the new leadership I'm not sure they would do that.

It's only sony games, not all games. Which is massive relief

It wouldn't work, though. It's a very different market compared to 13 years ago.

Hell, we even had a physical GTA5 PC edition back then. Imagine that.
