Forums - Sony - Sony now requires online check in for purchased PSN games

Maybe it's true, but creating a thread over a chat AI bot as officially news is pretty funny

My ps5 auto connects to my internet and I doubt PSN will ever go away in my lifetime. I mean you can still play Destiny 1 on PS3 servers.

This will have zero effect on my life.

That is my view.  Reminds me of a discussion about Steam, where somebody said I was going to be screwed if Steam went under...  which is technically true, but I tend to worry about things that have a probability of happening versus some zero-probability game.

what about physical games?

This is why I buy physical games. I think I've spent maybe $20 on digital in the past decade. I paid for a copy of Blaster Master Zero on the Switch and a copy of the Contra Anniversary Collection for my Xbox Series X, and I think that's it.

Anyone remember when PS4 destroyed Xbox with this is how you share games on PS4? Fun times. How long until this goes to physical copies. I deleted my entire wish list. More and more I am seeing why I am phasing into full retro.

@Bolded. I doubt that will happen, at least not without massive lawsuits. Physical copies are legally your property. I know companies try to patent things to take away control of other people's property (Ford has apparently filed a bunch patents for basically surveillance software that gauges the driver's mental state through various criteria and won't let the vehicle be put into gear if it determines the driver unsuitable to drive; also to serve targeted ads). But one of the most important things about property, one of its defining characteristics, is being able to use it fully at your own discretion without the permission of the original manufacturer. That's why there's lawsuits over things like "right to repair" as well as the "Stop Killing Games" movement.

So, I have a PS Account with many PS4/PS3/PS Vita titles purchased (specially PS4). I sold my PS4 years ago, but I plan on getting another one in the future. Once I do, will my digital games be available for me to download once I connect to the internet? Or have I lost all those games already?

This is only for purchases going forward, so your old games shouldn't be affected.

Sony also isn't wiping people's libraries, but when you get a new console you will have to connect it to the internet before you can play all the zero games you have downloaded on it.

Even if he was affected with new purchases going forward, he doesn't "lose all those games" anyways. Just reconnect to the internet and the license will be restored regardless. Diablo 2 has been doing this since the new remaster came out over 4 years ago.

Some of my friends only play single player games but they still connect their consoles to the internet. I seriously don't know anyone who doesn't have internet and if they don't then they most likely don't buy digital games or even consoles

Someone on Resetera has made the potential discovery that this is being done to stop an exploit where hacked PS4s can be used to take what used to be an indefinite license file during the 14 day refund period, get their money back but still have the game license. It appears (still needs more evidence from others) that the timer after this window will automate to indefinite since the refund period is over, since it did this for the same user when they checked at 16 days past purchase.

Yeah, this wreaks of “internet is OUTRAGED over seemingly nothing.” The DRM check is only one time, and it’s specifically within 30 days of purchasing digital software. Sounds to me like a patch to counter bad actors who have been taking advantage of a refund exploit. (So basically what Twintail commented.)

It's more about console collectors than everyday gamers. Everyday gamers won't really have a problem, as you said. But suppose you buy a digital game on your PS5 today and in ten years, you pull the system out of storage because you want to play it, only to find that you can't because the game was de-listed. You bought it. It's on your system. You even hooked it up to the internet... but no soup for you. Sorry. Game is inaccessible.

That's the problem.
