This is only for purchases going forward, so your old games shouldn't be affected.

Even if he was affected with new purchases going forward, he doesn't "lose all those games" anyways. Just reconnect to the internet and the license will be restored regardless. Diablo 2 has been doing this since the new remaster came out over 4 years ago.
