Forums - Gaming - *Sony rubs hands greedily* the console increase was just the beginning....

At least not yet.  A few months ago there were rumors that Sony was going to raise the price of PS+ and not touch the price of the console, but than the console went up.

Few months ago, RAM cost a lot less than it does now. Not excusing it but they aren't immune to that rise either. There is only so much absorbing the cost they can do when RAM makers are no longer prioritising consumer products.

The concept here is subsidizing component cost with service revenue...
But that doesn´t magically remove all potential component cost increases.
You may be able to subsidize X amount.
But if components rise by more than X, then end price will still rise even if by X less than it would.
(assuming that you are subsidizing console cost by X from service revenue)

In any case, this idea that Sony is being greedy here is absurd and depends on not understanding the business.
Sony already wanted to maximize revenue and profits. They do they by selling lots of consoles.
The increased cost here is not going to Sony profits, but to component suppliers.
Increasing console costs reduces console sales, which then translates to less software and service profits.

Sony aren't paying the higher RAM and SSD costs... Ergo they aren't "absorbing anything".

Sony have a contract with supply manufacturers for a fixed price/supply agreement for a set term, when that needs to be re-negotiated, that's when we get shafted.
I would envisage that would happen at the start of the financial year.

I bought my PS5 last year April right before the first increase and thank god I did because this is depressing.

I bought my Xbox Series X and Playstation 5 Disc for $750 AUD, 6 years ago.

It's insane how in 2026 that both are at $850 AUD and will possibly see a jump to $900 AUD or more.

I really don't think Sony is going to double PS Plus prices. Could they go up again this year? Possible. Probably not by more than 10-20 percent. Not 100 percent.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 122 million (was 105 million, then 115 million) Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

What reports exactly? I see no one talking about this anywhere.

Even if that rumour is untrue... the PS+ prices are already too high.

PS+ was a no-brainer until they got greedy and splitted it into "Essential", "Extra" and "Premium".
Especially if you also had a PSVita additionally to you PlayStation home console.

You got monthly PS3 games PLUS monthly Vita games PLUS monthly PS4 games for just 30 - 40 bucks per year (2.50 - 3.50 Euros per month).
Those licences were also permanent... they were no temporary titles which can disappear from the subscription library anytime.

Of course they are only active in paid subscrition months, but you can unsubscribe for months (or years) and when you resubscribe, all of them are available again.

The same goes for Xbox Live Gold / GamePass. It was such a great deal!
The Xbox360 (and original Xbox) game licenses of Xbox Live Gold even stayed active after the subscription ended!

In 2024 both my PS+ and my GamePass subscriptions ran out and I haven't missed them for a second since then.

Can someone confirm if this is true? It actually might not be, i cant find more information on it, and the official Sony account on X also doesnt have anything on this. Might have posted too soon

You can start by including an actual source lol

PSN and Nintendo online drove me to PC.

PSN at $80 for 6 years: $480.
Nintendo $50 for 6 years: $300

$780 buys a nice GPU. Sony can do whatever they want with the ps6, I won't interested. Too few exclusives and paying for online is absurd.

Don't need to pay for access to old games when emulation is free on PC.

The PS Plus increase was what I was expecting for this year, tbh.

But on top of the hardware insane price increases... lol.

Good chance to finally stop renewing my Essential subs.
