Yes, but they did the same with GTA V, not by that much time, but they delayed it twice.

GTA VI getting delayed is a meme at this point. I'm sure it'll be great, but all the delays are exhausting.
Grand Theft Punk 2077 and even if it's not it's gonna be bland as hell, they are probably putting in some edginess as we speak after all the "woke" backlash to other AAA titles and what not and they'll make an even bigger balls of it. RDR2 may have had delays like this but the trailers didn't look this generic and safe, with what I've seen of GTA 6, it just seems like it's gonna be a disappointment. I'd reckon Ghost of Yotei factored into this decision in some way shape or form.

I'm mocking them... hard.
But then, I remember when they shipped three GTA games in three years... and they were all amazing. So perhaps that's why. I know what the industry use to be, and what it is now is a far cry from that. A far, far cry.
I so called that. And then those other publishers went and delayed their games, now what?

This was my first thought when they first delayed it. I remember the headlines saying GTAVI was going to be more tame and mainstream. Didn't make any sense for a GTA game other than due to the political and cultural climate at that time. Now that things are shifting, it makes perfect sense that they'd go back to the drawing board and make changes so it's more like what you would expect from a typical GTA game. I also agree that Rockstar has likely been paying attention to what's been selling well and what hasn't over the last few years, and they've realized the new direction for GTAVI was a mistake and are taking the time to correct course. Luckily for them, they have that luxury.

PS3 - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.
PS4 - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.

PS5 - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.

Un-delay them?

Since they were already going to short-shaft us PC gamers with a delayed release, it feels nice to see everyone suffer.
Jokes aside - I don't even care all that much anymore, I bought GTA V literally two console generations ago. GTA games are always worth playing, in my opinion, but it's not like I'll put life on hold waiting for the next installment. I'll buy it, likely love it, but it's not the end of the world with more waiting at this point.
I also agree with the above notion of making changes due to time having passed in the industry. Their original vision is probably quite far from what we'll be getting as an end-product. I won't be surprised to learn that they had to scrap their entire approach and start over, or at least make significant changes. The Alpha leaks were now over three years ago, that's almost an entire development window for an decent AAA title. And now, with the rumors about the fired personnel having shared unfair working conditions and terms over Whatsapp (Rockstar claim that they shared "game-specific" things on there in a group, that doesn't make any sense if all members of the group were actual employees working on the actual game), there's probably a lot we don't know about the whole process.

I have a different theory: In order to make sure launch is as clean and void-of-controversy as possible, Rockstar pushes launch to correspond with PS6. Launching 30fps on a base PS5 would not be received well…at least, not by the internet (which loves so dearly to latch onto the most minor of flaws). Save it for PS5/PS6 as a cross-gen experience, and you suddenly avoid a potential PR nightmare! With how big this game’s budget is, Rockstar likely is trying as hard as possible to avoid any and all issues. |
I don't think this will matter to them. Even going back to Starfield people quickly moved on from frame rate to talk about the content of the games. And as with the likes of Zelda frame rate is just not a defining factor when really talking quality...
If the delay was trivial it wouldn't be a crazy idea but delaying again would be huge PR damage in itself, damage to internal morale and be a gargantuan loss of income for a fiscal year.
Based on Sonys own statements about the PS5 it sounds like the hardware is not fixed as they need to understand how things like universal compression work in practice, I don't think there is a set internal release.
