I liked almost every Sonic game the critic called "trash".

What’s crazy is how not a single 2D/3D mainline Sonic game has over 90MC. SA1+2, Sonic Unleashed, and Sonic Mania are among my favorite games ever!

Games that I felt were much more deserving of success are Tempest Rising and Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess

In Tempest's case, the game is clearly a love letter to Command & Conquer in the best ways possible and felt like a proper modernization of that kind of Action RTS. Epic soundtrack, loading screens that take up the entire screen displaying analog lines like C&C, sound effects and bass heavy explosions are awesome with headphones on, distinct factions with unique units that are fun to experiment with, and a surprisingly deeper story than expected. Was probably a good decision to use CGI commanders rather than live action lol. SteamDB estimates the games sales around 250K and it's deserving of so much more.

In Path of the Goddess's case, this is Capcom at some of their most creative. Very PS2 era feeling game. An Action Strategy hybrid that has hack n slash combat but then being able to assign combat roles to all your villagers that constantly keeps you engaged, all set in a fascinating Japanese mythology setting. Seeing the behind the scenes videos showing the miniatures Capcom devs created and the practical effects showed how much this game was pet project that they really wanted to make, and they nailed it! No sales figures, but Capcom confirmed the game didn't meet sales expectations.

Both games are my GOTY's for 2025 (so far) and 2024, and deserved so much more than they received!

Agreed on Kunitsu-gami, it's brilliant little game that's so unique and stylish, a real breath of fresh air in this age of franchises and homogenous blockbusters; a real shame gamers didn't give it a chance.

Chibi-Robo: One of GameCube's best titles, though not the best. I'm replaying it on Switch 2 and it's still a classic. It only sold 0.39 mil and even the Wii port in Japan sold about 0.05 mil.
SoulCalibur VI: Only about 2 million units. I love II, but VI is my favorite of the series and one of my favorite fighters. It was profitable, but I would've liked to see it sell millions more because it's so high-quality.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 122 million (was 105 million, then 115 million) Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

Yeah, if I'm not mistaken the best Metascore a Sonic game got was Sonic Adventure 2 for Dreamcast with an 89. And I doubt any other Sonic game will reach that anytime soon, even if it's an amazing game after all.

Sonic Unleashed was VERY underrated. It's not a perfect game, but come on, an 60 on Xbox 360? 54 on PS3? It's still remembered by the fans as one of the most fun Sonic games ever made.

Sleeping Dogs - I find it to be one of the best GTA-alike games out there, yet it went pretty much under the radar for most people.

Probably Rune Factory Frontier, it sold quite low, but I felt it was one of the most interesting games on Wii.
Not sure how I’d feel about it today, but I liked it a lot at the time.

Some others would be the third person shooting games like Godfather and Scarface on the Wii, those should have done better.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I don't tend to view it that way about any game when it comes to how much other people like or dislike them.
It's mainly just that people have different preferences.

God of War 2018 and Breath of the Wild got 10's across the board. Everyone loved them, sold a lot, etc.
But for me the overall experience with both was kinda just okay.
And I've enjoyed obscure titles that few people played or enjoyed.

Although some times people don't give a game that they would like a chance, because they don't believe they will.
And we some times see that with sales for a series suddenly exploding after a certain entry, and older titles in that series get boosted sales or Remakes, etc.

But I don't think that's necessarily the faul of the market, but perhaps more about how the developers/publishers decided to market it. Or that some games are just more difficult to market than others, and it's not really anyone's fault there.

Guardians of the Galaxy is my favourite single player game of the generation and easily the best writting we've seen in any AAA game.

Gameplay was fun and varied but closer to a 7/10, everything else was 9.5.

For the negative opinions:

  • Final Fantasy 7 (Original) - It still remains my most overrated game of all time. Many aspects it was praised for had been done before in other RPGs that released prior to FF7. For example. The shocking death of a party member had already been done by Phantasy Star (PSII and PSIV) twice. The party size was scaled back to 3. The material system robbed characters of individuality outside of limit breaks, so there as no reason to use anyone by three strongest characters.
  • GTA3 - I borrowed GTA3 from my brother and for about 90 minutes it was amazing. Once the shock factor wore off and I got to the actual game it self. I found it boring. I had more fun playing True Crime: Streets of LA and Sleeping Dogs.

For the postive opinions:

  • Sleeping Dogs - It took everything the I liked about True Crime Streets of LA and cranked it to 11. The game was and still is excellent. Why the game wasn't a massive hit still boggles my mind today. The narrative, the combat, and the driving. It nailed everything. The graphics were very good for the time and honestly aren't that bad now.
  • Guardians of the Galaxy - I know why this game failed. The Avengers was a debacle and GotG paid for it's sins. I was stunned at how good GotG was. The gameplay was good but not exceptional, but everything else a great. The graphics, animation, voice acting, it was all top tier. The interaction between Drax and Lady Hellbender still makes me laugh. Kudos to the devs for being able to create their own renditions of the characters that weren't just Temu versions of the movie cast. It was nice to see a version of Gamora that was more accurate to the comics.

God of War Ragnarok surely was not as beloved as the 2018 game, but critics really liked it and it sold very well. I found the story to be utterly silly, the action lacking, the pacing absurd and was deeply disappointed.

Snake Pass is the most inovative third person platformer of the century and to this day one of my favourite games of all time, even though it came and went and today is largly forgotten. Completely new, yet an absolute delight to play.
