Yeah, it's interesting that people like Curl and Firebush enjoyed the game so much. I guess it's a lot about how much you've been craving that classic "Metroid Prime feeling". If you wanted a game in that vein you wer probably more likely to be disappointed.

@curl-6 and @firebush03 : How would you rate the game compared to other games in the Prime series? I'm curious to find out!

While I did enjoy Prime 4, I would rank it well below Prime 1-3; those are 10/10 and 9.5/10 games for me, whereas Prime 4 I felt was an 8/10.

The pacing and voice acting/writing were flaws in my view, but I felt they were overall outweighed by its atmospheric and beautiful environments, smooth and precise game feel, and boss fights.

I am not too off from that, more a 7/10 for Prime 4, meaning still a good game.  What hurt the game for me is the final boss fight, hated it.

I did end up enjoying the game, but I do agree, it wasn't a metroid game.  Nintendo should have called it something else.

I hated the desert and the lack of connection between areas.  It just left me wanting.

This will definitely answer the question as to why I wasn’t all too disappointed: I’ve only played Metroid Prime Remastered, and not even half the game. I’ve never played Metroid Prime games, so I wasn’t too informed on what to expect. I can definitely tell that it is a drastically different experience from Prime 1, but TBH I don’t mind it all too much. I 100% prefer Prime 1 to Prime 4 no doubt, but that doesn’t mean I find the game bad.

I finished the game on normal and now I'm playing it on hard. I do really like most of the game. The dessert, the bike, the handholding en the final bossfight + ending shouldn't be here or should have been a lot better. But still :P When playing the game for a second and third time. I don't dislike the dessert or bike anymore. The handholding becomes even more tedious. I'm hoping for a Metroid Prime 5. If I look at the best parts of MP4, I think they still have it in them to make a fantastic MP5.

However, the following also applies to me. I played a Metroid game (Prime Remastered) for the first time in 2024 and finished it last year, and it really took me a while to get into it. So I don't have the connection with Metroid that others do.

It's very evident with Prime 4 that it's production was very rocky and that Retro did their best to salvage what they could while reportedly being tied to design decisions made before they inherited the game.

I feel like if they go on to make Prime 5, with their own design from day 1 and taking the lessons learned from Prime 4, it could be great.

That said, I still feel like they managed to pull together an enjoyable game from the mess they were given, which is something of a miracle in itself.

Put me in the camp of somebody who enjoyed it and still thinks positively a few months out.

I thought it was a better game than Prime 3. I don't think all Metroid games need to be metroid-vanias , and consider even Prime 1 to be barely such (it hides it well), with Prime 2 onward not falling in the genre, in my opinion.

The series probably does need to shift back in the non-linear direction though. I hope Metroid Prime 5 (which I think will happen) has the aesthetics of Prime 4 with the world design of say Dark Souls 1 (obviously not the same platform mechanics or combat, just the layering and multi entry-point design.) That's probably what most people want.

I don't know about US, but retailers are selling the game for much lower than 70/60 USD for a while (I got mine for 48% of the digital launch price)

This is the first time I've seen a Nintendo game being sold for half of the price barely 4 months after its release. I've seen some posts stating it's also receiving deep discounts in Japan

My impression is the game failed to break even, so they are trying to recover some development costs as much as they can

Same in the UK, although unless these discounts are also on the Nintendo storefronts then these are mostly likely retailers just trying to get rid of stock. And then there is a combined effect of the Switch version bringing down the price of the S2 one. The game sales leaned heavily on S2 (like 80% at launch) which makes me think S1 was very over supplied. Since the upgrade path is only $10, if you sell the S1 version for $30, it doesn't make sense to sell the S2 version for more than $40.

As far as charts go, I've been following the UK figures where its stayed in the retail charts (top 40) longer then any recent Metroid. Last week it was 25, week before that it was 37. These aren't huge number but they are legs which can add up to very solid numbers over the years. For now it's still one of the only "AAA" Switch 2 exclusives, so I think it will keep legging it out if its made it this far.

I was playing through Remastered but finally got to the Phazon suite and don't know what to do and a quick google, looks like I have to fetch all of the artefacts scattered across the levels?? Yeah, I'm not doing that. I'll move onto Metroid Prime 4 now. Based off how cheap the retail version is, it may be my first physical game in forever.

People comments have me apprehensive but the art direction is kind of insane, so hopefully I can look past its shortcomings.

Thanks for your answers, Firebush and Curl! I guess the enjoyment one has when playing Metroid Prime 4 depends a lot on what you expect and want out of the game.

As for me, my ranking of the Prime games unfortunately is 1 > 2 > 3 > 4. I was really craving an experience similar to Prime 1 and 2, which is why I went away disappointed with the latest entry.

I can definitely sympathize with you on this. Super Paper Mario, for instance, is a very fun game…until you remember the previous two installments. I went in hoping to somewhat scratch that TTYD itch, and ended up dropping the game in chapter 8 after having felt so burned by the story, which felt like a huge step down.

Maybe someday you and I both will come to appreciate these black sheep entries for what they are, instead of what they are not. It’s always ideal to enjoy game than it is to not, after all.
