I don't know about US, but retailers are selling the game for much lower than 70/60 USD for a while (I got mine for 48% of the digital launch price)
This is the first time I've seen a Nintendo game being sold for half of the price barely 4 months after its release. I've seen some posts stating it's also receiving deep discounts in Japan
My impression is the game failed to break even, so they are trying to recover some development costs as much as they can
