A lot of the Nintendo games we're seeing now have been in development for a long time, and some are cross-platform. They're also achieving pretty high native resolutions and frame-rates. DLSS isn't quite a good candidate for them.

I suspect we will see DLSS in more mid-lifecycle and late-lifecycle Nintendo games though. Especially whatever the next Zelda turns out to be, and Monolith Soft's offerings (which used FSR on Switch 1.)

I believe Tears of the Kingdom, Splatoon 3, and Switch Sports use FSR1, while Monolith Soft used in-house solutions in Xenoblade Chronicles 2/3.

Sooo do we bet the first new Xenoblade or new game from Monolith Soft is gonna be at 1080p docked because they gonna push the hardware hard like they did early on, or do they bet for a higher 1440p upscale with softer imagery ?

Given that both Xenoblade 2 and 3 used a relatively low native resolution with upscaling (spatial + TAA in 2, custom temporal upsampling in 3) I expect they'll adopt a similar approach on Switch 2, combining a comparatively low native pixel count with DLSS, in order to allocate more resources to stuff like world scale/detail and effects.

The results should be much better this time around though as DLSS is far superior to the upscaling methods used in 2/3.

Likely, though, I don't know what exactly they are using but the camera motion blurring effect they've got going has always been pleasant weirdly enough so I lowkey hope they got something similar with their next gen game.

Also considering the horse power of the next system, I wonder how they gonna scale their ambitions this time around. Looking at the art books of XC3, they always see so big with their worlds. The Switch 2 will give 'em more than enough to probably scale up some of their ambitions again. I can only hope they can manage them but honestly, let them go bat for the moon again !

Yeah Monolith Soft have pushed Nintendo hardware since the Wii so I am very keen to see what they can pull off with a generational leap over Switch 1. We're in for a treat I expect, given the epic worlds they squeezed out of Wii/Wii U/Switch 1.

Whatever the game the Director/Founder Tetsuya Takahashi is working on apparently. They gave the notice of that last year if I remember in August.

When docked, the game has a resolution of up to 1440p. Handheld mode features full 1080p with HDR.

Then they aren't very good in marketing.

All screenshots in the source are in 720p and with jpg-artifacts.

The information we have is that CPU performance is higher in portable mode and this would surely indicate most if not all portable games that are quite demanding are upscaling from quite a low resolution. The fact CPU performance is higher and DLSS requires more CPU processing depending on how low a resolution it starts from surely indicates most portable games have a low native resolution. If you factor in the battery capacity and the fabrication of the chipset it all makes sense that they maximise use of the CPU to minimise use of the more power hungry GPU. I feel its safe to assume most Switch 2 games with demanding graphics are upscaled for portable and for docked they will be upscaled from a higher native resolution as docked has a huge amount of extra power in wattage to use. Also on the small screen artifacts will be harder to see but on a big living room TV they will be easier to spot. Nintendo seems to have been completely logical with its approach to the hardware. Everything Nintendo have done makes sense I feel although I personally resent the high prices and fairly low performance of the hardware I feel commercially Nintendo have got everything right with regards profit margins.

Are you screwed if you already bought the game on Switch? I haven't, but I'm curious.

Switch 2 version is separate from the Switch 1 version.

No free upgrades or minimum payment as far as I know

WB doesnt have a history of doing that so likely fully priced and a separate entry in library.

The "Nintendo Everything" source uses 720p screenshots.

Here are the same screenshots in 1080p on IGN:
