Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Switch 2 Game Prices. Will it change how you purchase games?

What effect will the price of Physical Switch 2 games have on you?

I was already primarily d... 14 25.93%

I will switch from physic... 4 7.41%

I will keep buying physic... 22 40.74%

With these game prices I ... 14 25.93%

Total:54

I will likely stick to physical. I hope I am understanding the game share feature correctly. That could save me some cash. For Splatoon 3 I ended up buying 4 copies (2 @ $60, 2 @$55) so the whole family could play together. If game share works for Splatoon 4 I will spend way less for all of us to play together.

Yes for sure. I probably won't be buying a Switch 2 cause Nintendo don't do sales and when they do they are too slight and I refuse to buy games at this price already at launch. If they did first party digital sales the same way PS does them, I'd be more likely to buy in, There are games on my Switch I already won't buy for full price and that's 70 euro. No way am I paying 80 or 90 euro for any game.

I feel the economy already eroding, I suspect I won't be able to buy games on this system at some point. If only they show a commitment to relatively frequent digital sales will I feel secure enough to buy it.

Wait.....that actually can change a lot of people's perspective.

If Game Share works the way Nintendo is describing it, then only 1 person would need to buy Mario Kart World rather than all 4 of you needing to buy a copy......if MK World is a Game Share compatible title that is.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

Physical forever but I am not paying 80 bucks. Only game I am interested they showed is coming to PS5 and Series X. Daemon X Machina Titanic Scion. MEGA HYPE for that. It's getting a physical on Series X and PS5.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

I mostly bought digital on Switch, though I have something like 8-10 physical games. If the prices on Switch 2 really are $10 difference, especially given that even the digital prices are gonna be high, while physical prices are gonna be insane, assuming the $70/$80 split is correct, I will only be buying digital whenever I eventually get the system.

More importantly, these prices mean I'll buy far fewer first party games. I have 20 first party Switch games, but I doubt I'd buy more than a half dozen Switch 2 first party games if they cost $70. Hopefully with these crazy prices Nintendo eventually introduces discounts again like they used to.

Basically the Nintendo series I would pay $70 for are: 3D Mario, 3D Zelda, 3D Metroid, open world Pokemon if Gamefreak actually makes a stellar and challenging Pokemon game at some point, and Smash Bros but only if they somehow outdo Ultimate which seems unlikely so I'll probably just keep playing Ultimate. I'd buy the system bundle so get MK World for $50. And always the possibility they come out with some new game next gen that is incredible that I'd pay $70 for, but pretty much limited to a half dozen games I'd pay $70 for.

And very very few third party games I'd pay $70 for if those are gonna cost that much as well. I'd pick up Elden Ring for $70 if I had to but only because that is the main game I want to play out of all console games that have come out these past 4+ years in the current console gen.

So yeah, this horrible pricing strategy is gonna make me buy a lot fewer Nintendo games, and hand Nintendo a lot less money overall, than I normally would.

I usually buy PSN/Xbox credit when it’s cheap so I haven’t really bought anything at £70 (just 1 title).

I have no problem buying DK for £58, even if MP4, P-ZA are £60 but if they start hitting £70/£80 just for the standard editions and I have no option to get it cheaper then I won’t buy it. I’ll become a very patience gamer lol. When it comes to Switch I usually just wait till there’s 2 games I want and then buy vouchers to make a saving. But I expect a big increase to voucher prices. I expect my buying habits to remain the same for the time being.

One question is if third party publishers will follow Nintendo's lead. $80 Titles? $10 extra for physical? etc. And will this result in them being both $80 on PS5 and Switch 2, or will Switch 2 physical games cost more than their physical PS5 versions?

Would be hilarious to see a Switch version of a AAA game being sold for more than the PS5 version.

Switch has some nice RPGs that has had me sometimes waver in getting one. However, I never liked the price premium of it being handheld when I was only ever going to use it docked thinking that a pure console version might be cheaper. It is now 2025 with Switch 2 being $450. My calculus has changed, though I still would only ever use it docked, I am considering a Switch 2 slightly more than I ever did Switch 1, for these reasons.

1. Backwards compatible, so all older RPGs exclusive to Switch 1 and all newer RPGs exclusive to Switch 2 will be available to me.
2. Future proof for me. I am still gaming at 1080p both console and PC. Someday I will find a relatively cheep 1440p 32inch TV and cheep 1440p 22 inch monitors.
3. $450 is honestly not that expensive an option for the power Switch 2 offers, imo being somewhere between PS4 Pro and PS5. PS5 is $500.

Might still wait until after all this tariff nonsense is gone.

We really went from Switch where the average Nintendo game was probably around the high 40s to low 50s (some are less than 60 and TOTK is an outlier at 70) when you do the math to the real possibility that the average is going to be around 65-70 for Switch 2. From the launch, there is already going to be an $80 game.
I don't think any physical games are going to be $90, I think that's misinformation. I think people are mixing up Euro and USD.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 40 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

I doubt I'll be getting a Switch 2 anytime soon, maybe in a year or two after launch if the price drops. Same with any games that launch. I have no problem waiting for their prices to drop before getting them, and if the prices don't drop then it just means I'll be getting fewer games for the system overall.

What of Nintendo's products, hardware or software, has had any permanent price reductions in the last 8 years though? lol hopefully a decent holiday sale happens at some point in the reasonable future.

Well, exactly. That's one of the main reasons why, after having the console for over five years, my wife and I have a grand total of 13 games on the Switch. If we're counting only games I've bought for myself on the system, I have five games.
