Wii was an improvement over the original in almost every way. 2 was still pretty fun and I actually still felt it was really charming. U is still a fun, well-made game but very samey. It hurt New Super Mario Bros. and potentially Mario in the short-term having those games launch 3 months apart.
If New Super Mario Bros. U was the only NSMB game, it would be a masterpiece or close to it. Instead, it's very derivative.

I've only played DS, Wii and 3DS games. Havent played the WiiU or Switch version (which I have).


My favorite one from the three I played is the Wii one, 3DS was pretty good but too obsessed with coins.

The DS one is the only one I fully finished 100% (collected all coins and unlocked all routes).

U > Wii = 2 > DS

I'd rank them all tied for last place. They were awful. Everything felt like an ice level, and there was annoying music bah bah and the bland art. They felt like factory-stamped games rather than the polish and care of the 3D games.

Quite surprised by the love for the Wii and U versions, always thought most people prefer the first game.

never played Wii nor 2, but I can say that DS was an incredibly fun play-through!…whereas U bored me to tears.

NSMBWii, while still fairly conservative and lacking in ambition or creativity, still felt polished and fun at the time, and 4-player mayhem was a nice addition to the formula. It was a decent game, just well below the standard set my previous 2D Mario entries.

NSMBU wasn't terrible per se, but by the time it came out (and as a launch title for a HD console) it just felt so lazy and tired.

New Super Mario Bros Wii, hands down.
But the original NSMB was also great for its impact.

The 3DS game was repetitious, this game got boring fast and is IMO the worst of the sidescroller Mario games.
The Wii U version game seems good on paper; it’s pretty, but I didn’t find it fun or satisfying to play.
