Wii was an improvement over the original in almost every way. 2 was still pretty fun and I actually still felt it was really charming. U is still a fun, well-made game but very samey. It hurt New Super Mario Bros. and potentially Mario in the short-term having those games launch 3 months apart.
If New Super Mario Bros. U was the only NSMB game, it would be a masterpiece or close to it. Instead, it's very derivative.
