Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why I think Goku should never come to Smash Bros.

First of all, let me get some things clear: I don't hate Dragon Ball, neither do I hate Goku. The fact that I don't get along with fans of this series doesn't automatically makes me hate Dragon Ball and it's characters.

In other words, this isn't a hate letter to anyone, it's just my opinion.

Well, back in the late 2000s and early 2010s, I had a somewhat popular brazilian blog about Super Smash Bros. I still update it, but in a very slow pace, since blogs are pretty much dead, or at least nowhere as popular as back in the days. It wasn't huge, but it had it's fair share of visits and comments.

People would love when I made posts about Super Smash Flash 2. Since owning a Nintendo Wii wasn't very easy here in Brazil, and SSF2 could run in any computer with internet connection and Flash support, it was by far the most popular subject in my blog. Then... Well, people found out about Goku joining the roster.

McLeod added the Dragon Ball protagonist. Probably because people literally worship him around the internet. That's Ok, he's a fighter after all. But... Well, let's just say I even lost motivation to talk about Super Smash Flash 2 in my blog after a few incidents.

When I were to post links for people to play the beta versions of SSF2 in my blog (I remember McLeod even thanked me for spreading the game, he's such a good person), my blog users usually would post comments like those:

"How do I turn Super Saiyan 3?"

"When is Vegeta going to be added?"

"How do I unlock Vegeta?"

"Are more DBZ characters coming?"

A detail: Vegeta wasn't even planned for the game back then.

Literally almost all the comments were about Goku and Dragon Ball characters to come. I was slightly disappointed that nobody was talking about Lloyd, Sora, Tails, and other characters McLeod had added. It was all about him.

But there was one day when I lost my composure. There was this random guy, who posted something like that:

"Man, this game is garbage, why can't Goku kill everyone with a single punch? He's the most powerful being in the universe. And if McLeod wants to make a good game, he should add Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, Trunks, Krillin... This game makes no sense."

At first I thought he was joking, but he wasn't. He was serious about it, since he kept talking similar things to other people at the comments session. My answer to him was something like this:

"Dude, you don't even know what Super Smash Bros. is about. If you want the entire DBZ roster, you should go play a Dragon Ball game instead."

Yeah, no. If Goku gets added to an official Super Smash Bros. game, I can see what would happen. Fanatics for this series will ask for it to become a Dragon Ball game with Nintendo characters. Or they will complain the game is not balanced because Goku should kill Mario with one finger.

For the good of our favorite fighting series, Goku, and any other Dragon Ball character, should stay away.

That's my opinion.

I never considered your take, but it's a possibility. Goku is among the heavy hitters characters who are S-tier in terms of popularity along with Mario, Mickey Mouse, Pikachu, etc. It never ocurred to me that Goku joining could steal the show and bring forth a significant flood of toxicity into the Smash community.

I am from latinamerica too. I watch Dragon Ball, I like it as much as the next guy. I know many fans IRL and I often read a lot of Goku discussion online (i find powerscaling particularly amusing for example and he's always involved and compared). It may sound rude, and I apologize for it, but I can confirm firsthand that the average DB fan who really takes the series seriously is usually a bit obnoxious about it.

I can't imagine Goku in a smash game to save my life because he's not a videogame character no matter how many times the series get adapted into a videogame. But if Goku could join anyway despite that, I'd still rather not.

Not a video game character. Only reason needed. Smash only celebrates video game characters. Jump All Stars series is for anime.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Smash has already blurred some lines by having third-party characters and third-party characters like Sora who interact extensively with characters who originated in animated shorts first.
Goku absolutely breaks the kind of crossover Smash is. Dragon Ball may have a lot of video games, but it was a manga and anime first.
I also agree that the discourse surronding Goku would be irritating. There are so many characters who should be in Smash. Characters like Goku, Shrek, and Mickey Mouse are not those characters.

Dragon Ball is just that popular here in Brazil, it's bound to attract all kinds of people, even the stupidiest. Plus Dragon Ball characters are very strong even in comparision with most other anime, even if Dragon Ball power levels are vastly inconsistent and don't reflect what the characters are supposedly capable of doing while actual fights take place.

I don't see why a random dude in the internet would get you that mad, tho.

Counterpoint- it would be fun and I could care less if some people on the internet are weird about it.

The smash community has already its fair share of toxicity. Not familiar with the fans of Dragon Ball but It seems unlikely that they are more toxic in general.

Or maybe it is just the Melee community or the competitive one?

It would be the ultimate wtf scenario because it'd break the borders people put up as to what characters can get into the games.

Usually, the newcomers have all originated from video game game first, so I expect them to keep it that way. Undeniable that there's a demand for characters outside of that scope.

But considering what a character like Goku can do .... That's not what I'd be looking for in Smash lol

The potential for sales, above all else, I feel would dictate whether we get Goku or not.

Jeez, what's with the long essay? Let me help you on that... he wont come, period. Whatever anyone think he should come or not, he simply wont be in smash in any form. (Probably a Mii costume look alike)

There billions other stuff that Nintendo can do to bring more sales. Putting a character that go against the franchise foundation would be the last thing on the list.
