Forums - Sony - PlayStation |OT| Playing Astro Bot on the Horizon Until Dawn

What intrigues me the most about 2027 is if they really get to release Cory's game and Intergalactic in the same year and if they are going to release Horizon Hunters, 4loop and Fairgames in that very same year. Two (posible) mega hits and the forced end of the service push (because of cumulative failure) in the same year, would be quite interesting to watch.

I for one am hope all succeed. But I'll admit I'm finding the gameplay of 4loop to look a little drab. Hopefully there's a more exciting showing for it around the corner.

But I think it'll be this year. Don't see the game taking until 2027 to launch. Surely?

Astro Bot is a very possible PS6 launch game candidate.

There is no way Sony holds GT8 to a launch windown, it'll release when it does, GT6 released 1 month after the PS4, as a PS3 exclusive, PD does what it wants.

I also doubt a Santa Monica game will be held for a launch windown and not release exactly when it should, Sony wouldn't hold their second biggest studio over a system launch, they never did, and likely never will. GoW Ascension and TLoU also released as PS3 exclusives in the year the PS4 released.

Naughty Dog, Santa Monica and Polyphony Digital are studios I think will never have launch games, that's not how they roll, and Sony mostly doesn't care about holding massive games for the launch.

After Guerilla Games became one of their highest budgeted studios with Horizon, I also find it hard to believe they would have a launch game, even as when they did once, with Killzone Shadowfall for the PS4.

Team Asobi and Insomniac having games for the launch are way likely. I think Bend, Media Molecule and Sucker Punch are possible candidates, and as I expect the PS6 to release November 2028, Sucker Punch would have time for a game to be there, if they were already working on it by the end of Ghost of Yotei cycle.

I don't think it makes sense to reference patterns from a very different era. Every PS6 game will be cross gen. That did not apply to PS3/PS4. In 2027 for example there wouldn't be a scenario where GT8 launches lets say in December, but then doesn't have a PS6 patch which allows more complete performance.

For example did Sony release any PS4 exclusives after 2020? I don't think so, everything came to PS5 as well.

Do I think they would "hold" a cross gen game for 6months to align with a launch? Nope. That's why I think Intergalatic is not a launch title. Would they hold a game for 2-3months? Sure, depending on what else is happening around that window.

I don't think they would hold a Naughty Dog, Santa Monica or Polyphony Digital game even 2-3 months to align with  anything.

I do agree they will have PS6 versions, but I don't think they would mandate a PS6 simultaneous release or holding the game otherwise. You can reference the year the PS5 released then. Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part 2 where not delayed to have a PS5 version on release either. I really don't think Sony would make a big studio hold a game release to have a crossgen version, at all.

Yes, but these were games that were launched completely separate from the PS5 launch window, not 2months before. As I said I wouldn't expect Intergalactic to be "held" for 6months, especially as it's already been marketed as PS5 game. But games yet to be announced, which haven't already missed their release targets (like TLOU2 did), that are lining up close to the launch of a new platform would probably have gears shifted to accommodate the new platform and orientate around said launch in the modern era.

The game would not literally be "held" as the team would just be working to a slightly adjusted target which would mean slightly less crunch or more time to polish, or the opposite.

Release dates are strategic targets, it's why you never see Sony launch a big game in January or December. They never want to "target" those months for marketing reasons. So if a game looked like it would go gold roughly around November, Sonys job as a publisher would be to set the appropriate release date from there. They wouldn't just say well if its gold in November then we must launch in January. They'd set a February release date and the team will work towards that. That's why delays are so common, because the strategic target may not actually align with the reality of development.

Fundamentally though the discussion should whether you think GT8/santa monica games may align with the PS6 launch which is why I suggested them as launch titles, not whether Sony will "hold" them til launch.

TLoU2 released 5 months before the PS5, GoT 4 months before the PS5, 1 single month more than other 3 months time. That's why they weren't released in the PS5 release windown, because Sony wouldn't hold it, at all.

Sony has released big games on December, my favorite game ever was released on December. GT6 as well.

Of course Sony has desired launch windowns, they probably put pressure so they are met, but that has nothing to do with forcing a studio to delay a game to have crossgen, a game is delayed if its not ready, Naughty Dog announced delays from the original date Sony wanted them to release all the time.

About your last point, that's what I'm talking about as well, if GT8 would end up releasing very close to the PS6, but Polyphony Digital was doing a PS5 game, not a crossgen game, it wouldn't get delayed to be crossgen and miss the PS6 release windown, at all. At least IMO.

We have examples for every single new generation release of Sony not doing it, since the PS2 until the PS5, but none of it happening, we never had a huge crossgen game on releasez It's only natural I would expect one over the other.

Again, I think you're looking at the idea of Sony "holding it" wrong.

TLOU2 is a game that was targeting 2019 initially, it was not a game that was launching alongside the PS5 or ever had the intention to have PS5 features. It's not comparable to a hypothetical GT8 launching fall 2027 which scalable RT in mind for example.

Ghost of Tsushima was announced for PS4 and targeted June originally until it moved out the way for TLOU2 (again strategic), it was not a game lining up with PS5 launch.

All the meanwhile PS5 already had it's actual launch line up scheduled for Q4 which would be disrupted by delaying summer titles into the autumn. Amongst these titles is Miles Morales (A cross gen game)... I'm suggesting games that are already aiming for Sonys Q4 window will naturally align with the new console launch and that will be taken into account unless, they genuinely intended to launch much earlier (summer).

What it feels like you're arguing is that Playstation and further more the studios involved would have no strategic alignment about new hardware and everything would just release when it's ready. We know this not to be the case because at a console launch they do the unthinkable and launch multiple 1st party titles on the same day (strategically). Demon Souls, Miles Morales, Sackboy Adventures, Astrobot's Playground.

It doesn't make sense to selectively pick out GT or any other game because the past examples you're looking to are either outdated (like GT6) and relate to a time before cross gen, when development was devoted to a single platform. Or they are instances where the games clearly fall outside of the seasonal window like Ghost/TLOU2 which were not really aligned to the PS5. I think even with those last 2 examples those games still reflect a point where development was single platform based, whereas I think now, especially with scalable RT features & performance/image quality being a focus etc I find it very hard to believe any game would be in development for fall 2027 and not be designed to boast of PS6 enhanced mode.

It doesn't really matter either way, we don't know what GT8 or SantaMonica games actual development cycle is lol. If there was to be one of them which would launch near the PS6 and not align with launch, I'd actually suspect that to be SantaMonica's game because it may not have any features which scale up beyond resolution/FPS. Whereas we know GT8 will have raytraycing.

What I'm arguing is that their highest profile studios definitely are not holding games to align with a system release, they are not forced to develop crossgen versions of games they are working on for half a decade in the last months so they can have it ready for a launch, they can do what they want, and that is proved many times during the generations.

I'm 100% not expecting Sony to come to one of those studios, Naughty Dog, Santa Monica and Polyphony Digital, and asking them to delay a game they are developing so it is ready for a system launch, I don't see it happening, at all. Those studios have a massive amount of freedom to do their own things.

Sony doesn't care much at all about having big first party games for system launches, they work with partners for that and release their consoles in the time of the year with the most high profile games around. That's part of their strategy, Playstation has been that way since day one.

Even as Amazon was supposed to ship my copy of Saros on Wednesday, I could go pick it up today, so I got it home some hours ago, played a bit of it, and it is really pretty much Returnal 2.

At least the first run wasn't easier than Returnal, but since I can now upgrade permanently some stats it should be easier. I did turn off all assists tho, but even so it still has clearly a bullet pull when you are aiming close to an enemy.

The characters look ok, the game scenarios and materials look good, and the effects look awesome.

It lets you change the color of all kinds of projectiles and lasers by type, which is GREAT, so I know exactly what kind of attack is coming towards me by color alone and can react a lot quicker.

It is still a lot of corridors with some bigger but still pretty small fighting areas, and a few side paths for challenges and/or rewards, at least up until now, as I couldn't make it up to the first boss without dying.

It is much brighter than Returnal and I appreciate it, it is a lot less confusing playing it the first time now than when I tried Returnal back then.

I think there is a decent background story going on but at least by the start of the game most chars are quite bland and uninteresting. I really don't think they introduced them properly, but I read all the logs to know what I can about everything.

Well, that's my very early impressions so far.

I don't think any of Sony studios or IPs are above co-ordinated releases . I largely agree with you in the sense that the developers hands are not being forced to make cross gen or delay their game by 6months, but if it aligns, I totally think they'd co-ordinate titles around hardware launches.

For example I don't think GT (2009) and PSP Go launching on the same day is a coincidence. It was a marketing choice. Nor do I believe Miles Morales would have launched in November if it wasn't for the fact there was new hardware. Sony haven't had a November software launch since...

I also wouldn't say Sony doesn't care when every system launch has been driven by first party showcases like Resistance/Killzone/Miles Morales/Demon Souls/Uncharted Golden Abyss and games like Drive Club and Motostorm which aimed for launch but were delayed

In the modern day hardware environment we would not see something like what happened with GT6 because PS3 was a completely different architecture and PS3/PS4 quality assets were hugely different/not scalable.

Yeah I can't agree that Sony ignores their launch with big IP.

While I agree that Sony won't hold on to games and delay their launch, I do also think that if a game is ultimately expected to be ready around the launch of say a new console, that they'll massage it to align, because why not?

Especially now where everything is cross-gen for a few years. If Intergalactic is expected to launch like a month before PS6, they'll delay it for PS6 I feel. But if it's like 2 months before I doubt they do anything. They get to basically market the game twice with the PS6 updated specs being a marketing opportunity just like PS5 Pro is for their games now,
