From Sony Interactive entertainment Buisness data and sales page, just says more than 117m but no mention of 117.2m.

So PS4 is now dead in terms of hardware sales and will not be surpassing GB/GBC and finishes as the 4th best selling videogame hardware ever

(soon to be 5th). It was a gigantic success and put the Xbox brand in it's place after being challenged by the XB360 in the prior generation.

PS3's peak year was 14.30m, the PS4 had five years higher and outsold it by around 30m units.

Collapsed way faster than anyone expected beforehand.

Which is even crazier considering the shortages for the new systems...

The site is so biased, that a lot of people expect the PS5 to sell less than the PS4, even if Sony themselves said they expect PS5 shipments to surpass PS4 shipments (launch aligned) in 2023.

And Sony themselves killed the PS4, they are the only ones to made it collapse.

The PS3 had great legs, it's strong tail got it passed the XB360.

Well if anything I think the shortages and high shipment cost actually were part of the reason the PS4 died so quickly, as Sony decided to focus all their production/shipment efforts towards the PS5. If there had been plenty of PS4s available then it could probably have benefited from the newer systems being so hard to get, but that wasn't really the case.

I'm sure many of them have had a look at the statistics and see that the chances that the PS5 outselling the PS4 would break some established trends.

Playstation + Xbox sales taken together have always amounted to ~175M each gen:

1. PS2+Xbox: 183M
2. PS3+360: 173M
3. PS4+XBO: 168M

Meaning if the Xbox is stronger, then the Playstation sells less as a result. Since the XS is selling much better than it's direct predecessor, unless this gen breaks with the model it established the 3 previous generations, PS5 should sell less than the PS4 did.

That being said, there are some unknowns that could alter this a bit: How long this generation will be can have an effect for instance, if there will be some mid-gen upgrades like the PS4 Pro last gen, and so on. So far, noting shows that this gen will deviate from the previous generations, but time will tell if this will stay the same.

Another thing to note is that the Playstation + Xbox total has been dropping a bit each generation. This trend will have to be reversed for there to be any chance for the PS5 to outsell the PS4 since the XS will almost certainly outsell the XBO.

This is Sony's official data and i think the reason sales are either quoted as 117m, 117.1m or 117.2m is because some numbers don't add up due to the rounding process. FY2014 adds up to 14.9m but is rounded down to 14.8m, FY 2019 adds up to 13.4m but is rounded up to 13.5m and FY 20 adds up to 5.8m but is rounded down to 5.7m. The yearly totals add up to 117.1m but are rounded down to 117m, it would be better and more accurate if Sony rounded numbers to the nearest 10k instead of the nearest 100K.

But that generation was very long, PS3 was already 7 years old and XB360 8 years old when PS4 launched. I think people were desperate for that generation to end and move on.

Yeah you're right it was 7 years it just didn't seem as long as the PS3/XB360 gen for some reason probably because time flies as you get older, anyway PS3 legs weren't as good as i thought but like you say not as bad as PS4 which only sold a little more than 3 million after PS5 launched.
