What would your views be if EA used Kickstarter for Fifa every year or Nintendo for the next Mario?

Well fifa and mario haven't been dead for awhile. It's apples and oranges.

A better scenario would be like chrono trigger or suikoden. To answer your question, I would be happy that I'm getting the game.

And multi billion dollar companies cannot take the risk of creating a new Suikoden? It's an insane situation if that is the industry we are moving towards. And where do you draw the line? What is there to prevent this from being a tactic used by most major publisher, eventually resulting in Kickstarter being irrelevant for the smaller developer?

And why would Yu even need to convince Sony that fans of Shenmue wanted a sequel when that has been common knowledge for the last 15 years? This was Sony trying a PR stunt at the cost of the fans and Kickstarter. I sure hope Kickstarter can prevent this somehow and Sony can pay for it with their own cash instead of exploiting fans.

Because what people clamor for online, isn't necessarily quantifiable as units sold.  Adam Boyes explained this in an interview posted earlier in the thread.

Sony needs to now do this for Legend of Dragoon. Ooh la la, I'd throw alls the monies at them.

Thanks jlmurph!

If Kickstarter find a project to have been unethically funded, is there a risk that it gets taken of the page? Hopefully that happens and Sony are forced to pay for their own games, instead of using these crappy tactics.

I don't think you understand how often this sort of thing happens on Kickstarter. Bloodstained, Pillars of Eternity, Wasteland 2 have all secured outside funding in addition to the kickstarter funds. It's a very common practice for developers to use kickstarter primarily as a tool to convince investors that there's interest in the project. This isn't a Sony project. This is a Yu Suzuki project that Sony is co-funding in addition to the raised Kickstarter funds, likely in exchange for console exclusivity. They're clearly not funding the whole thing or else there wouldn't be a PC version at all.

So no, Kickstarter isn't going to remove anything.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

I look at Capcom, Sega and Konami and I can tell you its hopeless. kickstarter maybe the only way to get the beloved franchises from those idiots. So fans can get the next installment.

How many companies have took risks with games or ideas and went belly up in the video game market? I can understand if a company wants to test or justify if resurrecting a dead series is worthwhile with a PR stunt. Shenmue 2 cost 70 million to develope in 2001. How much would it cost to develope shenmue 3 on current gen consoles?  That's not exactly chump change.

As I mentioned before, isn't the whole point of kickstarter is to fund or "kickstart" something? It succeded.

If a beloved series gets resurrected via kickstarter because a big publisher saw that people really wanted it, where's the bad in that?

Realistically, any of the AAA old series can't be revived without serious money behind 'em. Kickstarter by itself can't do that alone but it can get enough attention to those games.

I don't see the point in demonizing something that brings life into old series of games.

Great now we are going to get a ton of "help us get so much money and ms/sony will fund us" announcements

There are not to many Shemues out there. There is a reason its been 15 years and no sequel. This was clearly a case of "You say you want it, now show us."

Whatever the kickstarter ends up raising it will only be a fraction of the total cost of the game (Marketing, Dev cost, etc). Sony will be investing there part and taking most of the risk here.

Yes but why did Sony, a mega corporation, need 2 million to make the game; which is pocket change for them? They said that the game needed 2 million in fundraising or else it would not be made. Why would it not be made? I don't get it. Asking for money ahead of time as a show of faith, when you have the money in your pocket, is so stupid. Is this the new practice? Asking consumers to invest ahead of time instead of the corporation making an investment risk? I cannot agree with that.

I would argue Sony didn't need, I would argue that Shenmue's creators needed it to prove to Sony there was enough interest in a sequel.

That's a good point. I guess Aeolus is right tho. I'll stop arguing about it, since I am happy it's happening. If you guys are perfectly ok with donating then I have no reason to complain

Well, I can understand the concerns, don't get me wrong.  But it's my understanding that this is actually fairly common now.  And I can see where Sony is coming from.  I believe the last (or first?) Shenmue's budget was 20m...imagine what Shenmue 3's budget is gonna be.  So Sony's not going to put down that kinda cash without knowing damn well there's a ton of interest.  I don't blame them, but, I also don't blame people for their concern either.  It just seems to make sense to me (and I didn't donate).

That would be completely different...

Sony doesn't own Shenmue. If they did own the game they would have funded it themselves for sure. If this had been done for one of their own games then trust me the reactions would be way worse.
