Well fifa and mario haven't been dead for awhile. It's apples and oranges.

A better scenario would be like chrono trigger or suikoden. To answer your question, I would be happy that I'm getting the game. 

And multi billion dollar companies cannot take the risk of creating a new Suikoden? It's an insane situation if that is the industry we are moving towards. And where do you draw the line? What is there to prevent this from being a tactic used by most major publisher, eventually resulting in Kickstarter being irrelevant for the smaller developer?

I look at Capcom, Sega and Konami and I can tell you its hopeless. kickstarter maybe the only way to get the beloved franchises from those idiots. So fans can get the next installment.
