This is what a lot of us expected and horrible for the industry. Kickstarter is supposed to help smaller developers to create their dream project, not for huge publishers to get some free publicity and use the gamers to get some extra cash for their games. Soon you will se EA, Ubisoft and others go the same way and basically drown the smaller publishers on Kickstarter.

Let's hope not... That's why I'm not getting this game on my PS4. I probably *cough* won't *cough* pirate a PC copy of this game. I really can't support these kinds of practices. It's really sad, too, as I think this project could have broken all kinds of Kickstarter records and released on all sorts of platforms.

It seems you're more twisted up about it not being on other consoles than anything else and you are disguising it as some crusade against unethical kickstarter practices. every comment you make mentions "other consoles" so that is obviously your real issue.

Thanks jlmurph!

Great now we are going to get a ton of "help us get so much money and ms/sony will fund us" announcements

If I remember correctly, they said if it meets the goal, the game will be made. Everyone knows that it would cost more than 2 mil to make the game. Who do you think was gonna fund the rest of it? Maybe it's the company that showcased the game and made everyone aware of the kickstarter campaign. It was common sense to what platform the game would be going to and there were no deceptions.

I could just say that you're looking for a needle in a hay stack but that's used too much. You're just looking for a black hole in outer space or for a drop of fresh water in the ocean.

Yes but why did Sony, a mega corporation, need 2 million to make the game; which is pocket change for them? They said that the game needed 2 million in fundraising or else it would not be made. Why would it not be made? I don't get it. Asking for money ahead of time as a show of faith, when you have the money in your pocket, is so stupid. Is this the new practice? Asking consumers to invest ahead of time instead of the corporation making an investment risk? I cannot agree with that.

I would argue Sony didn't need, I would argue that Shenmue's creators needed it to prove to Sony there was enough interest in a sequel.

Others have already answered those questions. Sony doesn't need the money but it was a lot of money for someone to ask for a game to be funded on kickstarter which was part of the point. If the really high goal (for kickstarter) was reached, people really wanted it and it was undeniable proof of that. It's a really well played PR stunt that will make the fans of shenmue very happy. I'm sure they will get their money's worth.

This is a game that a lot of gamers want and they supported it with their money. How different is that from preordering a game?

I want to know who at Sony didn't believe in Shenmue 3. That it had to go to kickstarter first before they fully fund it. How dare him or they doubt!

Another good point.

What would your views be if EA used Kickstarter for Fifa every year or Nintendo for the next Mario?

Well fifa and mario haven't been dead for awhile. It's apples and oranges.

A better scenario would be like chrono trigger or suikoden. To answer your question, I would be happy that I'm getting the game.

Exactly. After Sly Cooper: Thieves in time, I guess Sony wants more than good faith.

And why would Yu even need to convince Sony that fans of Shenmue wanted a sequel when that has been common knowledge for the last 15 years? This was Sony trying a PR stunt at the cost of the fans and Kickstarter. I sure hope Kickstarter can prevent this somehow and Sony can pay for it with their own cash instead of exploiting fans.

It's a free marketing publicity stunt.

They were successful.  The fact that people are still talking about it is just gravy....
