Forums - Sony - Sony has just confirmed that now that the Kickstarter goal has been reached they are in fact helping with funding and development of Shenmue 3

If it weren't for Sony, the game wouldn't have even been available for backing.

You're joking, right? I don't mean to be inflammatory, but Kickstarter was meant to back projects that couldn't otherwise recieve funding.

People put their hard-earned money down on a game project that was ultimately market testing by Sony. That sounds an awful lot like fruad to me.

EDIT: Just to be clear, I am a big fan of the first two Shenmue games, and was considering becoming a backer of this project.

Yeah, ok. I think you went too far here. At the end of the day, people simply pre-ordered a game, or got to have their names in their credits, which to me is not a big deal but to others possibly is. It's most certainly not fraud. But if you don't want the game, no one's forcing you to buy it.

Why are people so angry that Sony are doing this? Did they forget that before no other company was even willing to give it a chance, hence the 14 year gap?

Great news, I wonder how much work they have done on it already. If very little, I wouldn't expect this until 2018.

Good job!

That was unprofessional in my opinion.Probably alot of people gave money for it hoping that, since it was on kickstarter, it could come to other consoles, even if it was showed during the sony conference.Still, im happy that Shenmue III is getting the money necessary to make a truly wonderful game.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Great news! Another exclusive game for PS4! Sony is dominating video games!!!

Yeah....
I was giving them the benefit of the doubt here, assuming that the shenmue devs just got given a chance to showcase their stuff, in a hope they would get funded. Sony backing them before a kickstarter is an absolutely abhorrent move that goes against the very purpose kickstarter was made for. It may be perfectly fine to do, but to me it ruins the chances of smaller devs on kickstarter as other publsihers might pull this stunt and flood the market.

And just to say, i find that quite funny people complain about this when it's Sony but no one complained about Kingdom's Come while it's the exact same situation, they needed some amount of money to convince their investor

So you are saying this happened before?

Yes with the game Kingdom's Come, a lot are waiting for this one  ( you know the medieval open world rpg simulator )

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

as long as it doesn't become a ps4 only thing then I'm good since I'm a backer

You can imagine the discussion if it would have been MS doing this with Shenmue 3. Internet as we know it would've crashed :).
