And not shoving unwanted hardware down people's throats, or essentially telling soldiers tough luck, or threatening to not let you share your games, or using an interface commonly mistaken for a deeply hated OS..

Lifetime "Sales" |
Yeah, after that comment, I looked over Sony's sold-through announcements and it's definitely shipped.
| Puppyroach said: Yes the number is shipped, nothing else. Sell through is most likely about 21.4M so VGC is pretty spot on :). It is down about 20% YOY but that can largely be explained with the extra stock of 1.4M from the December quarter. It is not good numbers though, one would it would have had at least some growth, especially considering it is the market leader. |
Why would you expect growth?
Do you expect PS4 to be so amazing as to defy the supply and demand laws of economics? It is expected that at launch price the PS4 demand curve will start to drop at some point. That point being from the beginning of this year is probably as expected by anyone who understands supply and demand and the video game market. It is guaranteed, normal and fully expected that PS4 will be down YoY this year until there is a price cut. And because Sony doesn't actually want to have negative growth in its 2nd full year (because that is bad PR) it is guaranteed that Sony will cut the price for PS4 this year. If the negative growth is fairly substantial leading up to the price cut you can definitely expect that price cut to be $100 in the USA (and comparable cuts in the other markets). If the negative growth is not that much then the cut is more likely to be $50. Being down 20% YoY at this point is quite high IMO, so I am thinking Sony is likely to go for a $100 price cut, as long as they are confident they can manage the production side.
I am very interested to see what Sony will be projecting for PS4 shipments for this financial year. That projection will tell us a lot about whether, what and when to expect a price cut. PS4 managed about 14 million shipped for FY15. If Sony projects 16 million+ shipped for FY16 then a substantial price cut is coming, because without a price cut we'd probably see only about 12 million PS4s shipped. If they project ~20 million shipped then a $100 cut is all but guaranteed.

Seems pretty safe to say. Sony doesn't expect it to happen, their forecast puts the PS4 at 38.3m shipped by the end of March 2016. So sell-through by the end of this year should be around the 35m mark, if sales are in line with Sony's forecast. |
thats sad.
I was hoping for a battle Wii vs PS4 looks like it wont happen..

So VGC is waaaaaay undertacking PS4. Even if this is shipped, there's no way in hell there's around unsold 700K PS4's sitting on store shelves by the end of March.

PS4 never stood a chance against the Wii's first two CY's. But it likely won't drop as fast either, the Wii grew almost 50% yoy in its second CY, but went down about 12% in its third, another 18% in its fourth and a whooping 33% in its fifth, essentially more than halving the annual sales in 2-3 years, while the PS3 and 360 peaked in their 6th and 7th CY, so while the Wii had more than halved its sales; the 360 (save for one years that saw a slight drop and then it grew again for a couple of years) and PS3 kept growing and also dropped a lot more slowly, their drops in the 30's or more % came the same year the new PS and Xbox arrived.
There should be a crossing point somewhere along these sales curves and I think the PS4 still has a shot at beating the Wii lifetime but not by much since I expect it to die a lot more abruptly than the PS3.
Haven't people learnt financial report is shipped and sold through have fine prints for the estimative?
But yes at April ends ps4 possibly sold 22.3-22,5m and have 50% marketshare.
