It is down about 20% YOY but that can largely be explained with the extra stock of 1.4M from the December quarter. It is not good numbers though, one would it would have had at least some growth, especially considering it is the market leader. |
Why would you expect growth?
Do you expect PS4 to be so amazing as to defy the supply and demand laws of economics? It is expected that at launch price the PS4 demand curve will start to drop at some point. That point being from the beginning of this year is probably as expected by anyone who understands supply and demand and the video game market. It is guaranteed, normal and fully expected that PS4 will be down YoY this year until there is a price cut. And because Sony doesn't actually want to have negative growth in its 2nd full year (because that is bad PR) it is guaranteed that Sony will cut the price for PS4 this year. If the negative growth is fairly substantial leading up to the price cut you can definitely expect that price cut to be $100 in the USA (and comparable cuts in the other markets). If the negative growth is not that much then the cut is more likely to be $50. Being down 20% YoY at this point is quite high IMO, so I am thinking Sony is likely to go for a $100 price cut, as long as they are confident they can manage the production side.
I am very interested to see what Sony will be projecting for PS4 shipments for this financial year. That projection will tell us a lot about whether, what and when to expect a price cut. PS4 managed about 14 million shipped for FY15. If Sony projects 16 million+ shipped for FY16 then a substantial price cut is coming, because without a price cut we'd probably see only about 12 million PS4s shipped. If they project ~20 million shipped then a $100 cut is all but guaranteed.
