Really, if anyone seems interested in producing future consoles it's nintendo more than the others.

...Then again, I get the distinct impression that you might be trolling :p

Is free speech dead? That is how I, and MANY analyse the Nintendo situation.

no trolling here. NX will be irrelevant.

A few things:

-there's no right to free speech on these forums

-I didn't tell you to be quiet, but rather surmised that you might be trolling due to the nature of your post and your signature

-This "NX" may or may not be successful (it's not fair to assume it will be "irrelevant"), but it's also the only future hardware that any of the big 3 have announced, meaning that we only know for certain that Nintendo will be making more appearances in the future.

That's all :p

Everyone: please stay on topic. If you see a rule-breaking post, report the post. If you want to engage with another forum member, engage with his or her points; don't take off-topic jabs at his or her integrity or ulterior motives.

Lastly, don't "backseat moderate." It's against the rules.

"Backseat Moderating in the forums will also be treated as spamming, as it will derail the topic and conversation of the thread. You are not a moderator, so if you do feel like a user is breaking the rules, report them and move on. Let the mod team handle moderation."

Nintendo will be relevant, in handheld and because there's still some mario fans. If they want to go head to head against ms and sony, they will have to release the next home console first and at least 5 times more powerful than the ps4. I might sound like a spec lover, but specs matter, and that will bring 3rd party, secondly, the network, must be overhauled and sound like 21 century stuff, not like we still in 1999.

And I'm not saying this like a bad criticism. Just answering the question the way they should do to win me over. Ohhh, and stop relying so much on mario, because you know what nintendo, some people don't like it and seeing his face all over the place can annoy those people and stop them from buying you stuff all together.

Obviously not.. Nintendo wil be less relevant next-gen than the Ouya, I tell you!

Nintendo royally fucked themselves this gen... or did they? See, I believe the Wii/DS were anomalies. Their consoles have been selling less and less since the release of the NES. I believe this is a continuation of said trend. Of course, they can always change that course either by getting lucky with another Wii again or making a traditional console.

They can be relevant next gen but this gen really did them no favors. They've been hurting their reputation most of the time the Wii U's been out with delay after delay, sticking with the ancient practice of region locking (the 3DS really didn't need it..), harmful policies, among other things.

If they play their cards right they can become relevant again next generation.

....Back on topic...

Let's work backwards: what does Nintendo need to do with the NX to be relevant? Well, I think three things.

  1. It has to be close enough to competitors that developers will multiplat on it, even if it isn't selling that well. This means x86 architecture and 8 GB RAM.
  2. It has to have an aspect which tells both consumers and developers this isn't a Sony or Microsoft console.
  3. It has to launch with at least one killer app, probably two.

And an Unspoken Fourth:

4. The Creator's Program HAS TO GO. There's no way Nintendo will get competitive marketing if they continue to punish people for promoting their material, especially when Nintendo spends almost nothing on marketing, anyway.

1, 3, and 4 are all easy enough, and entirely doable. Start with the PS4's stats and architecture and build from there, repurpose Zelda U and Xenoblade X as launch titles (or even as Ultimate Editions) and kill the creator's program. 2, however, is much harder...but if anyone in the industry can pull that off, it's Nintendo.

I think that this is a difficult, but doable road for Nintendo. Here's my prediction:

  • 30 percent chance of failure forcing Nintendo to restructure.
  • 35 percent chance of a failure limping them along for 5 more years.
  • 30 percent chance of moderate success.
  • 5 percent chance of becoming the next big thing.

Actual gaming isn't subjective. It's about controlling the game for real, not just qte or watching it. the three games you listed may be, but nowadays most devs aren't putting effort into actual gaming and release qte fest bug filled interactive movies.

Gaming is subjective. Different people like doing different things in games. Also, your opinion of what most devs do is very wrong.

Personal preferences are subjective, what makes a game isn't. what makes a movie? what makes a music? there's a formula to what makes a game and many devs are straying too far from it.

PS. Obviously, if Nintendo can bring a lot of third party support is not a bad thing per se. But, it must not be their main focus, that's what I'm trying to say.

When they designed the PS4, they went around with questionary's, and asked developers of secound/third party, what they wanted in a consol ect.

They designed the PS4 to be easy to develope for, and its winning them the consol wars.

Nintendo exlusives + 3rd party games = pretty appealing consol, IMO.

For me, it would be pretty appealing. But it's undeniable that 3rd party multiplatform games sell worse in Nintendo consoles. I think that Nintendo consoles don't sell because of the third party support, they sell because of their exclusive games/hardware. People would buy PS5/XBox2 (maybe? xD)/PC it they want to play third party games, at least, that's how I see things are right now. Nintendo consoles are more oriented to Nintendo hardcore fans and families. Wii sold a lot, but not because its third party support, only because its innovative concept.

Obviously, Sony asked third party developers about their hardware, because Sony can't live withouth third party support. Sony, as a developer, is less prolific than Nintendo. But I think Nintendo could handle next-gen console on their own, and, if they're working on unifying handheld/home console departments, the droughts they have in WiiU could dissapear.

Do you consider only spacial interactions "controlling the game for real"? What about narrative control? 2D puzzle games? Turn based RPGs? Point-and-click titles? What about games like Xenoblade and The Last of Us that focus on a static narrative bound together with spacial interactions? Are those inherently worse than something with no narrative focus at all? What about others like Dear Esther that have no gameplay or story end goals, but have full spacial interactivity?

The actual (objective) definition for 'video games' doesn't exclude any of these. Even a game that's literally 100% QTE's fits within the definition. You're free to add your own sub-condition for what you believe does and doesn't count as 'actual gaming', but ultimately they're just personal additions, not universal absolutes.

Yes lets all enjoy playing mobile games, on the next gen Nintendo home consol.
That will fix the issue of nintendo consols missing 3rd party support...... right?

<_<

Honestly would much rather nintendo atleast tried to get the 3rd party support back.
But I guess they rather make money on their own software, than have it from higher hardware sales.

That said I think most would be happy enough just to have access to 3DS games, as well.
