Forums - Gaming - DX12 Adoption For Xbox One Is A Risk For Large Scale Production, Cross Support With PS4 Is A Factor

I'm guessing you've missed the statements since then about DX12 improving Xbox One's CPU and eSRAM performance.

Which statements? eSRAM was inproved in an SDK update and there has been a statement about improvement to the PC version of Fable.

Are you thinking of something else?

What will end up happening is developers will mostly likely choose DX12 and all it means is PS4 will get the port and possibly the slightly inferior version for the PS4 if hardware cant adapt to DX12 functions. Not sure why gamers think if its on PS4 it has to be the best looking version. Developers don't have to use its full potential. Just like how games are released today are built around PS4 and X1 getting the ports.

This will strengthen MS platforms and only detune the PS4 versions, but it will still get the games.

I highly doubt dves will want to avoid the PS4, with it selling like hotcakes the way it is. Who's to say the whole DX12 thing won't backfire on them, and devs will develop for PS4 first, and the other two later?

Ultimately the combined userbase of PC and Xbox One is larger than PS4, and porting between PC and Xbox One using DX12 is reportedly very easy (I believe a dev recently said it only took a few days).

The user base for sure, but what about the SW market shares? Not many games sell more on XB1 and PC combined than on PS4. And less there will be if this trend keeps going.

Still this is a non issue. The API are quite different already and many devs (no. Not Ubisoft) are doing their best to try to get as much as they can from the different systems in mutli-platform games. Not to mention that the speculation in that article is based on the assumption that DX12 will change things drastically in the XBox (which has been stated even by Phil Spencer that such won't be the case) and that any new graphical API in DX12 won't have a similar API in the new PS4 SDKs. Like the so much touted DX11.2 tiled resources that actually originated as an AMD extension for OpenGL in 2011, the sparse textures, and that were in the PS4 SDK since day 1.

Developers stop being lazy idiots and actually WORK for your money thank you!

so put the game out on two maybe three platforms using dx12 since its supposed to be easy to port crom pc to xbox. then work on the ps4 version while making money

You have a point. Ultimately the combined userbase of PC and Xbox One is larger than PS4, and porting between PC and Xbox One using DX12 is reportedly very easy (I believe a dev recently said it only took a few days). Seems to me like it would be a better idea for smaller devs who can't afford to develop a seperate PS4 version before launch, to develop for PC and Xbox One first, then a PS4 version later while the PC and Xbox One versions are earning money, than it would be to hold back both PC and Xbox One gamers by sticking with DX11.

The flaw in your logic is that while there are more PC gamers alone than PS4 gamers, most don't buy AAA games. For the most part, PC+XB1 sales do not amount to PS4 sales.

Next time, can you try to bring the discussion to an even lower point? I felt that your effort in this thread was a bit lazy.

Ubisoft platform shares last quarter: PS4 = 34%, PC+XB1 = 32%; Ubisoft platform shares last 9 months: PS4 = 34%, PC+XB1 = 31%

So not much difference between DirectX (PC+XB1 together) and PS4:

EA platform revenue last quarter: PS4+XB1 = $427m, PC = $218m; EA platform revenue last 9 months: PS4+XB1 = $1037m, PC = $657m.

Just for the sake of argument, let's split "PS4+XB1" 2:1 to keep it simple (2/3 = PS4, 1/3 = XB1). That would result in

EA platform revenue last quarter: PS4 = $285m, PC+XB1 = $360m; EA platform revenue last 9 months: PS4 = $691m, PC+XB1 = $1003m.

EA platform shares last quarter: PS4 = 25%, PC+XB1 = 28%; EA platform shares last 9 months: PS4 = 21%, PC+XB1 = 30%

Again, not much difference between DirectX (PC+XB1 together) and PS4:

Activision platform revenue last quarter: PS4+XB1+WiiU = $367m, PC = $104m (Online not included)

Just for the sake of argument, let's split "PS4+XB1+WiiU" 2:1:0 to keep it simple (2/3 = PS4, 1/3 = XB1, WiiU = 0). That would result in

Activision platform revenue last quarter: PS4 = $245m, PC+XB1 = $226m (PC-Online not included)

Activision platform shares last quarter: PS4 = 17.7%, PC+XB1 = 16.3% (PC-Online not included)

Again, not much difference between DirectX (PC+XB1 together) and PS4:

For sales, are we really just looking at physical sales? Cause Most of the people I know are half digital on the Xbox One, and I don't know anyone who has bought digital on the PC in about 4-5 years.

Aren't PC Sales almost all digital? They not tracked here.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

Pointing out a flaw in the logic of developers and being annoyed by their constant lazyness VS directly being rude to some random stranger to feel superior(or whatever)

I really am not good at doing the "low thing" Im sorry. Ill try my best next time.

P.S. I hope this reply was better? (I tried to make it as off topic as yours)

No seriously. I am annoyed by their lazyness and want them to start doing something instead of "press button for easy port" shit (I know its not working like that). Back in the day we got several versions of the same game that are all completely different be it NES/SNES/Gameboy/MegaDrive(Genesis) and now investing some time and money to make use of what the actual hardware has to offer is a problem? WTF.
