2016-2017, after their next consoles arrive. 60 22.73%

2025, better late. 17 6.44%

Yes, Iwata said that in response to requests for online games on the GameCube. He cited that the bestselling games of the previous year were offline titles while online games failed to gain traction, so that's why Nintendo wasn't going to make online games for the GC. It's a quote that is often taken out of context to prove some kind of point. Iwata's statement was obviously not something that applied to their future systems, hence why Mario Kart DS went online in November 2005.

The problem with your point though is that the Wii online system was a joke, and the Wii U is about 8 years behind in terms of online. Not to mention 3D World didn't even have online. They still shun online.

The fact they don't have achievements is a joke. Achievements should be standard in 2012.

Nintendo even has the perfect system for achievements: coins.

  • One yellow coin = 10 achievements
  • One red coin = 20 achievements
  • One blue coin = 50 achievements
  • Power Star = 1,000 achievements (or platinum trophy)

Because they think people should be able to know by themselves when they accomplished something great instead of needing some pop-up telling them so. Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be the case.

But seriously? Achievements are completely pointless.

@bold: Why you think that? Don't you think it's nice to share your activities/things you spent time playing and other know that you did that? Like I see many people speedrunning on games all over youtube and for them it's not pointless even though they don't get anything in return, just the recognition for doing so.

You already have this on WiiU, look at all the achievements posted to Miiverse.

for instance: https://miiverse.nintendo.net/posts/AYQHAAABAACNUKE369EIqg

So you complaining about things missing on Nintendo, that are already there. Only it doesn't take the shape you are used to.

Because unlike so many other video game developers, Nintendo doesn't need to give you additional incentives to play through their games more than once.

The experience itself is rewarding enough.

That is mean - and untrue, as most Nintendo games already have achievements.

Just because Nintendo didn't invest a lot into the Wii's online does NOT mean that the quote people use regarding Iwata is accurate.
Not only that, but your figure of "8 years behind" is a load of BS.  You're just saying that because you think that the Wii U's online is only on par with launch-version PS3/360.  That's most definitely not true, since it's very much a mixed bag of stuff.  In some ways, the Wii U's online is decent, and in other ways it's still lacking.  Much of it could be explained with Nintendo not yet making the investment in proper servers.  If you want to bring up the account system, look into the history of that yourself and you'll see that your figures STILL do not match up. (Hint: Microsoft's online accounts were also tied to the system itself on the 360)

Also, while achievements are a big thing and are implemented in many areas, how beneficial it would be to the current Nintendo audience (as I already stated earlier) is debatable.  It would cost money to implement, and gains they would see from doing so are not clear.  You keep treating all these Nintendo issues as if they have such clear cut answers and they don't (at least for the ones I've seen YOU address).

Wait, do people honestly think tha trophies/achievements would increase sales of their consoles/games?

Damn, you learn something new everyday.

I personally like them but the vast mayority of people don't care about them, its not as if Nintendo were to say "the new Zelda for WiiU will have trophies!" would increase sales of the game in any significant way.

Yeah, a friend of mine who is exclusively Playstation player talks about people who just buy games they would never pick in the first place (he says Hannah Montana as example), just for getting another platinum.

I`m guessing they don`t do this because they don`t see a major reason or need to do so. I also don`t see it as a vital thing. I`m fine with just playing a game and not needing to complete any set challenges programmed to keep me playing. If I like the game enough, and the challenges are fun, I`ll try for it. Some games do have achievements in them, like Zelda: Link Between Worlds and Ninten Land. It doesn`t show it to the world, but that`s okay, they don`t need to be shown.

Never heard of Miiverse? And many games have the option to automatically create a post, if you got an achievement. Other games ask you if you want to post your achievement to Miiverse.

I'm not going to wonder if Nintendo won't integrate something similar in their revision of Club Nintendo. From the beginning, Achievements should have been more than just bragging rights: they should have bought things, even if in a pitiful rate of something like 1000 GS = $2 for Live Arcade (or whatever the equivalent in old MS points was).

You should get rewarded for being great at games. Nintendo should lead the way there (or is MS doing that now? I seem to remember something about it).

Ubisofts Uplay does that, the app is available for WiiU. Only for Ubi-games though.

Because achievements are stupid and good games don't need them.

Is that the achievement for saving 500 allies? And it's only a bronze medal?

Yes, and I also thought it is harder than many silver achievements. One of the million rupees and 10K enemies killed is a silver, and that was pretty easy.
