Single player > multiplayer.

I don't even touch multiplayer in the majority of my games.

Tell me about it. Multiplayer has its nasty, undesirable people. Of course, there are the good sports, but moments ago I got badmouthed and taunted by someone who has a friend hosting a Versus Ops server (MGS Peace Walker) just because I left the game. They were basically killing everyone against them. So I politely replied back and reported the miscreant. This is what I despise from online games: you want to have fun, and there are a rotten few who just want to ruin that good time. That's why I prefer co-op rather than multiplayer.

Almost all of my WiiU and 3DS games are single player, as are most of my PC games.

I don't think there's much of a shortage of supply in single player games, more a shortage in GOOD single player games.

I think its because how games are made have changed. These days, multiplayer is just a way to add longevity to a game. Back then, games were hard. A beating them would usually take a while honing and mastering the skills required to beat the game.

If you look at a game like demon souls, its online component is mostly there to give you hints and make the game easier or devious. But the game in itself is so hard that you simply get all you need from it just trying to beat it.

But when majority of games have a single player mode that lasts all of 10hrs... they have to add another mode to give the game value. I miss the days when games actually sought out to challenge the gamer. I miss the days when there wasn't a checkpoint at every door and dying mean't you had to play 30min to an hour worth of game just to get a shot at not dying again in the exact same place. Miss the days when you were filled with dread knowing you were about to meet another boss.

Too much hand holding in games these days.

A.I. in games needs a big improvement before SP is back in the spot light. CPU enemies are to easy and predictable once you have figured the mechanics out.

AI has got nothing to do with it. These days the amount of code used to make the stupid AI is more than the amount of code used for every single enemy in ninja gaiden on the NES. Didn't stop that game from being hard as nails and challenging.

What needs to change is game design. These days games are made too easy. Back then you had to find a way to to be good enough to get yourself enough space to use a health pack just to allow you stay in the figth longer. Back then, if you used 2 of 5 available health packs before you get to a boss you would quit the level and start it again cause you know you need all 5 for the boss. These days, you just find a corner and wait and your health regenerates. These days tehre is a checkpoint after every 3 min fight.

Games simply got too easy, not that the enemies got stpid, if anything the enemies got a lot smarter. In BF4, enemies will duck, ru for cover, try and flush me out with a grenade, try and flank me...etc. In medal of honor frontline, all they ever did was just stand whereever they were and take pot shots at me. Difference though, in BF4, after all the glitz and explosions and flanking and screaming, all i have to do is chill in a spot long enough and I am basically as good as new. In MoH:F, you had to pick up a health pack to replenish your health. And sometimes, getting that health pack meant you would make a beeline through those enemies taking pot shots at you.... and usually two or three hits will kill you.

Hello VGC family! Hope everyone is well!

I have a question for you all....what happened to the industry? Why does it seem like games are being looked down on if they do no have some type of co-op/MP now a day? I have been gaming for 25+ years and some of THE BEST games I have played have been SP games. Like Castlevania SOTN just to give an example and it is a game I would replay again in a heart beat. So why do some people seem to automatically  take points from a game if it is only SP and say it has no replayability?

Does a game HAVE to have some type of co-op/MP for it to be worth it to you? Does it make a game better or worse? Does it play a big part in what games you decide to play or buy? It is just something that has bothering for a while so I figured I would get some of your opinions on that matter! Looking forward to some good discussions on the matter!

Not on Wii-U they haven't. :)

The single player is the most important part of a game, in my opinion. It introduces you to the world, its characters, struggles and helps you immerse yourself in that setting. It's a build up to the MP "Struggle"

Obviously, MMOs and MP only games are the exception. I personally prioritize SP over MP any day.

I'm the kind of person that'll put multiplayer experiences before single player experiences. I like to do things with other people really and gaming is one of those things. Playing a game solo is fun too, but to me it's all about how much you pay. What I don't like about single players these days is that they care mostly about better graphics and lack content but will still sell you the game 60$ when you can beat it in a rent. Multiplayer adds a lot of surprises and unexpected behavior from other players that can't be matched from single players. One person talked about AI and I totaly agree with him. Once you beat most single player games you can always expect the same again and again... it's like expecting to be surprised after you've watched the same movie again and again... I just can't.

To each his own though. Some of my best games ever are single player games. Shining Force series, FF Tactics. Kotor, ME, Star Ocean 2, FFIV-VI, Ninja Gaiden Black, Panzer Dragoon Zwei etc are all single player only and great games.

Yeah PC games have a lot of Sp games that seem pretty cool. But I am mainly a console gamer so that doesn't help me all that much unfortunately. While I really enjoy games with some good MP for fun. I more so enjoy games with a well made and thought out SP campaign that also doesn't baby you through the entire game. Let be a nice challenge...not crazy to where you can not beat it but hard enough to where you have to put in a nice amount of work.

This may be the reason RPG well JRPG games are my favorites. You can't just BLOW through them you almost HAVE to put in some work(grinding levels, searching for powerful summons, spells weapons and parts etc).

I stick with single-player myself, except for fighting games and Mario Kart. Publishers kind of prod people into MP to keep revenue streams going, though, and to keep people from reselling games.
