Forums - Sales - Global Hardware/US Software April 19th up!

I've always been suspicious of VGC numbers, and was always shocked how some people fought over how their console *won* for the week or month... only to find out it was totally different months later.

I personally think April will be a bad month all round (no major games coming out)... while May should be quite good. But I expect it to be good in PS4's favour. As others have said, if XBO cannot beat PS4 with price cuts and TF, how can it do better when that has slowed down. Even more so now that the prices are going back up in most places now.

I dont understand how this site does tracking, but it cant be that difficult to look at historical data to see which months do well/badly, taking into account NPD data and make reasonable guesses. I would also be adjusting it as soon as NPD comes in, as that would then allow better guesses for the following months data.. but it seems stuff gets changed at a later date when no one is looking :)

Based in that, can we all not disregar that ps4 is only beating the xbox one mostly because of it's price. They both were 349 pound for last 2 weeks and xbox one was at least 4 rank up ps4.. As soon xbox one went back to 389 it dropped.. This is to show you price is the most important issue ..

It was for a few days, but I saw the PS4 ahead of X1 before the price went back up.  People jumped on the deal when they could get it, then it started to drop

That's not true. Ps4 went ahead of xbox one after the price went back up.

An interesting comment. I assume you have some impression of the national picture for Gamestop, albeit not precise numbers. But the question is what's your console hardware market share? And do the sales patterns at Gamestop closely follow what happens across all retailers, or does Gamestop have down months when the country as a whole sells quite a lot, and vice versa, and it's only really annual sales and general seasonal patterns that match between a particular retailer and the country as a whole?

Actually I'm not to sure that they actually to well in given us numbers. In straight forward weeks they just use the data from professional tracking sites like media create and MCV to come with theire own data. They also take official figures from Sony and MS. When they do go drastically wrong is in weeks that some strange happens like a big launch of a game or a price cut. Because they can't rely on trends based on figures from tracking companies to come up with their own figure to guess the sales for that week. At this point VGC sometimes delays their figures to see what the tracking companies come up with before they put out theirs. Sometime those figures are to far away and they have to get some figures out and this is when they go wrong and expose themselves and that they're not actually using their own data to come up with their figures. Past figures get stealth edited and things go on like nothing happened.

Now this doesn't mean that VGC is a bad site, it isn't. I look at their figures regularly. What's wrong though is that it trys to be something it's not. It's not a professional tracking site in the sense that the actively get store sales data from all over the world. VGC isn't even sure of it's own numbers with and a great example of this was when NPD released their Feb 2014 numbers. VGC didn't stick to it's number, nor did they want to be seen copying NPD again, so they decided to meet NPD numbers in the middle.

Yep VGC aren't the most official source and they do need to alter their figures to be more in line with better sources regularly. I don't think that itself is such a problem though, or at least it wouldn't be if they were more open about the alterations that are made.

And thanks for the nice well reasoned reply :)

No problem. I also agree with you that the VGC team do a great job. They just need to be truthful of what data they use to come up with their figures. They can claim they have various amounts of types of data to come up with their own figures but it's very clear they don't have enough data to come with their own accurate numbers and their numbers are heavily based of other professional data tracking sites.

Other than that it's a pretty solid site that has come a long way since 2006.

They were both trading places frequently but I'd say xbox was ahead about 75% of the time but not by much. Considering they were same price but game with xbox and cheap controller it's not surprising the Xbox was way better value. However if the ps4 had a free game and cheap controller for 350 it wouldn't be in stock long lol.

PS4 has been consisiently ahead X1 sonce the price drop, but there was definitely some hours where PS4 was above the X1 at the same price according to the Bestsellers list

The PS4 might soon pull ahead of the X1 in the UK again, cause I checked Amazon just now and the Titanfall bundle deal seems to be over, it's back up to 390 pounds, now I don't know about the other retailers but I suspect that if the biggest online retailer is raising his prizes again that the others are going to do the same.

It was 349 pounds including Titanfall, thus actually cheaper than the PS4. Worldwide, if both were really priced the same without any extra stuff in one of the boxes, I'd be willing to bet that the PS4 would still outsell the X1 by a fair margin. Just look at the US, for a couple weeks in March it was possible to get an X1 with Titanfall for $450, which basically made the console as expensive as the PS4, and the PS4 still won that month.

"which basically made the console as expensive as the PS4" lol no my friend. all people see is 399 vs 450 at that time. All i am saying is x1 won'tbe able to compete with ps4 here in the usa and uk until both consoles are priced at the same rate.. now other places accross the world is a different story. ps brand is more wellknown

Praise the One.

Considering the official shipment numbers from MS, these numbers seem quite correct. Impressive to see it that high despite the higher price level. However, the numbers for both consoles aren´t really impressive at this point I for some big news at E3.

Yeah, no. I completely disagree with that, people are not that stupid, when you buy a console, you buy a game with it and you're not seriously going to tell me that people didn't realize that the X1 already had a game included while you would still have to buy one on PS4 for up to $60. You could argue that the console was more expensive to people that have no interest in Titanfall (and I think they had the same deal for Forza as well), but for everyone else the X1 was as expensive as the PS4.
