Actually I'm not to sure that they actually to well in given us numbers. In straight forward weeks they just use the data from professional tracking sites like media create and MCV to come with theire own data. They also take official figures from Sony and MS. When they do go drastically wrong is in weeks that some strange happens like a big launch of a game or a price cut. Because they can't rely on trends based on figures from tracking companies to come up with their own figure to guess the sales for that week. At this point VGC sometimes delays their figures to see what the tracking companies come up with before they put out theirs. Sometime those figures are to far away and they have to get some figures out and this is when they go wrong and expose themselves and that they're not actually using their own data to come up with their figures. Past figures get stealth edited and things go on like nothing happened.
Now this doesn't mean that VGC is a bad site, it isn't. I look at their figures regularly. What's wrong though is that it trys to be something it's not. It's not a professional tracking site in the sense that the actively get store sales data from all over the world. VGC isn't even sure of it's own numbers with and a great example of this was when NPD released their Feb 2014 numbers. VGC didn't stick to it's number, nor did they want to be seen copying NPD again, so they decided to meet NPD numbers in the middle.

Yep VGC aren't the most official source and they do need to alter their figures to be more in line with better sources regularly. I don't think that itself is such a problem though, or at least it wouldn't be if they were more open about the alterations that are made.
And thanks for the nice well reasoned reply :)

No problem. I also agree with you that the VGC team do a great job. They just need to be truthful of what data they use to come up with their figures. They can claim they have various amounts of types of data to come up with their own figures but it's very clear they don't have enough data to come with their own accurate numbers and their numbers are heavily based of other professional data tracking sites.
Other than that it's a pretty solid site that has come a long way since 2006.
