Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo's Best Bet Is To "Relaunch" Wii U as NFC Toy Machine For Kids

If I wanted to be selfish, I'd say, build a beast of a console with the same features as PS4 and make huge games the scope of N64. But if Nintendo wants to be the top dog again, it MUST find new water like it did with Wii. Everyone thinks the well has been tapped, but it hasn't. They just need to come up with the next big thing.

Are you crazy?

I'm buying a WiiU for X, Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3, Mario Kart & Smash Bros. These are all hardcore games (although Mario Kart does have a lot of casual appeal). This thread is complete BS, Nintendo has always appealed to the real gamers.

P.S. Whats? NFC? You never explained this abreviation.

There is no market for Nintendo to make consoles to their 30-year-old fanboy demo. This group is too small to sustain a console, especially one that has rising development costs from the previous generation.

If that's the future of Nintendo in the console business, then there is no future for Nintendo in the console biz. They can't keep making consoles that sell only 15-20 million machines with only 5-6 games that sell decent just because "Gary who loved Super Mario World 20 years ago and gets giddy after every Zelda trailer" says so.

Nintendo fans basically want a new Nintendo console every 5 years, but the audience isn't growing at all (unless there's a Wiimote miracle) and they will want the next machine to be around the PS4 at least ... c'mon. Nintendo's making no money off such a proposition. They need to start making money off the Wii U, or its curtains for their desire to be in the console space IMO.

At least get the freaking kids market, if you can't even do that, then you've just failed completely. A new generation of kids should know not just Mario, but Fox, and Pitt, and Samus, and Lil' Mac, and Captain Olimar, just like the Avengers movies really pushed Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, etc. to a new generation of kids.

I don't agree with the OP's NFC idea either, but continuing to make the WiiU a "hardcore" console for Nintendo fans only isn't the right answer either. Going down this route will only achieve Gamecube sales at best. The core Nintendo audience has been getting smaller with every generation and will continue to dwindle. Nintendo needs to think of something else.

I half agree. I agree that Nintendo shouldn't target the core audience with the WiiU, but are they even doing this? Super Mario 3D Worlds, Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong, Wii Fit U, Wii Party U, NintendoLand, Smash Bros, New Super Mario Bros U, and New Super Luigi U all seem like casual focused games (mind you I'll still enjoy half of them as a core gamer)

I think Nintendo needs more idea's like the Wii Fit and Wii Sports. They made a GamePad, but they didn't make a game which needed it. This is why the system is failing to sell IMO. Nintendo needs a game which requires the GamePad, but I have no clue what kind of console game can do that.

I definitely agree with you on the Gamepad. They needed something like Wii Sports was for the Wii. People were hooked on the console the second they started playing bowling.

Shifting their entire focus on this would be a bad choice. Offer another SKU with kid-friendly prices and games with all that stuff you mentioned, and keep their current SKUs for those who don't want to deal with such things or who don't wanna focus solely on that. Maybe re-design the cheaper NFC-oriented kid-friendly console w/ Gamepad so that a price drop is possible to make it more appealing for parents, because $299.99 isn't "price friendly" all that much. They're not keen on selling stuff at a loss, so they should do their best to lower costs as much as possible. Maybe also redesign the Gamepad "slimmer" for the regular SKU to cut costs for that as well.

They're shifting their focus, according to Iwata, on the Gamepad. While many thought that to be a bad idea, it's actually one of the smarter ideas, because it's the main selling point of the console (or at least it was meant to be). IF they can get that sort of Wii Sports phenomenon running again (not likely, but not impossible), they can secure a larger install base and a healthier console generation (relatively speaking). They're not dropping the Gamepad, because that'll leave Wii U in a very awkward position in the market if the Gamepad was a "separate" product. So yes, offer this kid-friendly NFC Toy-like SKU, but don't give up on those who bought, and will buy a Wii U for their core titles.

This is the worst idea for Nintendo I've ever heard. They'd be better off entering the mobile market instead of jumping on the Skylanders / Disney Infinity bandwagon.

By the way, Nintendo already has a franchise like those two... it's called Pokemon. But God forbid they make a true 3D Pokemon game on their home console, oh no we can't have that! Nah, keep putting out quick cash grabs like the Stadium-type games and Mystery Dungeon / Pokepark. That's sure to send your console flying off shelves.

That's the game the industry needs, but doesn't deserve right now.

Why exactly doesn't the industry "deserve" it?  Open world 3D adventure / role playing games are huge these days, and the Wii U is the best console Nintendo has had to release a game like this on.  It's now or never for a real 3D Pokemon game.

It's just a quote from the Dark Knight.

A Full Fleged Pokemon MMO would be good for the industry, but with the mainstream's focus on shooters and Nintendo's lack  of vision with their IPs especially Pokemon, it wouldn't be appreciated as much as it should be.

This is why the WiiU has failed IMO, and this is why the XB One is also struggling.

PS4 is doing fine because it was purpose built to play "core" video games with the best graphics, cheapest price, and on a reliable console with other good exclusive "core" games.

3DS is doing well for similar reasons as well. Nintendo won't get DS/Wii levels of success again if they can't make "innovations" in their games which require a new console.

Saying "just make a hit new casual game that makes the controller a must have" is a nice thing to say, it's kind of like saying to an athlete "well all you have to do is go out there and break the world record, then you'll win the gold for sure".

Well yeah ... easier said than done. Chasing fads is akin to gambling ... you may win some, but Nintendo is now also tasting the flip side of that ... sometimes you will lose, and lose big.

Nintendo has a lot of kid friendly IP ... its time to get kids actually playing these games -- not just Mario/Pokemon ... something like Kid Icarus should be a huge hit with all kids, but it isn't. Instead it's a bunch of 30-year-old Nintendo fanatics buying that, which is a problem, because that's a dwindling audience.

But if a kid has a Kid Icarus toy for $9 and starts to get into the character through a game or TV show ... now you're in business.
