Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo's Best Bet Is To "Relaunch" Wii U as NFC Toy Machine For Kids

Rather than push Skylanders and Disney Infinity out -- they have to reel them in. Possibly even make them exclusive. And encourage other kid friendly franchises to ( Lego, Transformers, Hot Wheels, etc) to jump on board.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Nintendo is great, blah, blah, blah, release more Mario, and 20 other niche games for me I'm guessing, lol.

If Nintendo was administered by me, they would not be in this situation to begin with, I would have had them release a system that was a fair bit more powerful than the PS3/360 with no gimmick expensive controller at a reasonable launch price and financed at least 3-4 addition game projects from 2010 onwards and taken full advantage of a year headstart.

Nintendo made a ton of money off the Wii, even if they didn't want to open costly new studios, they very easily could've found several other studios (like Platinum and Next Level) and ensured themselves a large wave of content. If you have too many games ... hey that's never a bad problem to have, simply sit on one of them for a month or two until the release schedule opens up.

What I'm suggesting in this thread is a strategy for Nintendo *now* given how badly THEY have f*cked themselves this generation.

They definitely need to decide to target it at someone, (who is it targeted at right now?) I think kids could be a good option because of the family friendly games.

They also need to hire this guy  for marketing purposes. I heard that he is pretty popular  with young children for totally unknown reasons.

Yeah, nothing like this had been tried before:

"Hardware design isn’t about making the most powerful thing you can.
Today most hardware design is left to other companies, but when you make hardware without taking into account the needs of the eventual software developers, you end up with bloated hardware full of pointless excess. From the outset one must consider design from both a hardware and software perspective."

What does NFC mean?

I like the NFC model, but I think it would be better if Nintendo released it as a 3d party thing across all consoles and used it as a feeder/advertisement for it's main franchises on the 3DS.

I don't even think the WiiU is worth a relaunch at the moment. I'd concentrate on more added value and just be happy if it stopped bleeding Nintendo money for the rest of it's lifespan.

No, all you said looks like a bad idea for now. The only thing that the wiiu needed and still need to be successful are games, lots of them and a real marketing plan. Saying its to late for harcore gamers after only a year on the market with no games to attract them is not what I would call a long term analysis of the situation at hand. What Nintendo aims is the family, not the kids. It would be a great mistake to focus on kids only as they grow up fast, have no money and tend to change their view on things in a microsecond. Nintendo have IPs for all group of age and style, but they are not currently on the Wii U and that's their biggest problem.

Nintendo needs:

-A price cut. $249 or less for the console will help sell it to more people, as well as making it more enticing as a second console to PS4 / XBOne owners who will not have many games to play in the next 9 months.

-A bundled game. Wii Sports did wonders as a casual game. Why there isn't a Wii U version bundled with the console boggles my mind.

-A unified wallet / account system. People are getting tired of rebuying all of their old games, especially when competitors have cross-buy features. This will help build loyalty too (since you would buy their next console, as you would already have lots of Virtual Console games for it).

-A skylanders type Pokemon game. I somewhat agree withe the OP on this point. Disney saw the success of Skylanders and copied it with DI. They have now sold over 3 million starter packs. Nintendo should have launched this game last year. However, I don't think they need to waste money on TV / movie tie-ins - they are better off just using that money for marketing (TV and movie productions are not cheap). Also, they shouldn't limit themselves to just this, as that would be silly (they would lose fans / other income streams in the process, and multiple SKUs can be confusing).

Aside from the price cut, Nintendo should easily be able to implement all of those ideas.
