Forums - Sales - Double standard with Super Mario 3D World and GT6...

I don't see Gran Turismo 6 as a flop, and neither do I see Super Mario 3D World as a flop. The sales of GT6 is rather a testimony of the state in which the PS3 is in. With 80 million potential hardware users, GT6 has quite low sales for being a GT-game. With that in mind it's tempting to wonder if the game hadn't been much better off as a launch title for PS4? I do believe such a move could have injected some horse power in GT6's sales.

Looking at Super Mario 3D World in comparison, it has sold around 1,3 million copies to a WiiU userbase of aprox 5 million. One in four WiiU users play Super Mario 3D World. That's a remarkable tie ratio, that would equal more than 20 million copies for PS3.

With such a comparison it's easy to fall into the bash pit and claim GT6 is more of a flop than Super Mario 3D World. However, the only true measurement of a flop is to look at sales estimates from the publishers, and compare those estimates with the real deal. If 1,5 million is on track with Sonys projections, it's hardly a flop. And if it's above their projections it can actually be called a success even with such "low" sales as 1,5 million.

Yeah, more people were unfairly bashing 3DW than GT6. The sales of GT6 deserve to be criticized. The key here is that only 5 million people have a Wii U, and as new people buy it a good number of them are going to pick up a copy of 3D. In contrast, most people that want a PS3 have a PS3, and sales of GT6 are WAY down from GT5 despite a larger install base. So saying it was a bit of a relative sales dud is fair. GT6 was doomed for this from the get-go, however, releasing the same time as the new Playstation. People just don't get hyped for late-life releases like that. FFXII, Skyward Sword, you can go on and on. They never sell as well as their predecessor.

My god what a bad thread.

Firstly, SM3DW has had more than its fair share of detractors and trolls pointing out underwhelming sales numbers.

Secondly, GT6 has a market upwards of 80 Million to aim at while SM3DW had a market of sub-5 Million.

Its not a flop and 2nd iterations of games on a platform typically do worse. Look at Gow 3 and Ascension, gow 1 and 2. GT 3 and 4. Mario Galaxy 1/2. I think GT is more prone to this problem because everyone I know that buys GT gets the first iteration cause of hype, dislikes it because its too realistic, and skips the next. They will buy GT7 though, forgetting that they dont like the genre. Just like me and the McRib every few years.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

There is no double standard because we are not comparing the same thing.

There is big difference between people buying a system for a game and people buying a game for a system they already own. It's the difference between spending 50 dollars and 400 (+) dollars. There are simply not that many people at the moment who can enjoy Mario 3D World for 50 dollars.

Furthermore Mario 3D world copped plenty of flack in weeks past for its 'poor' sales but seeing as it's now pushing a 25%+ attach rate and still going strong most people have realised that such criticism was a touch premature.

What do you mean? Not only does GT6 have an install base roughly 20x the size, but Mario probably has more doom threads than GT6 anyway! Just look for Knack outselling it, for example. Where are these GT6 doom threads when Mario had about 3 a day at one point?

Honestly, I expected this thread to be reversed. Both, however, are doing alright buy not excellently, though Mario is certainly changing things around. Do we need people to provide doom and pessimism whenever a game or something for a console they don't favor anyway? Whats the point, if not to merely fuel the futile "console wars"?

That's the real problem here, and the subject is irrelevant, so claiming one game is treated either better or worse than another is completely pointless anyway.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Both are amazing games. I wish for more such "flops" to come soon.

This, I stole from grandpa...It's called soap.

Ive heard a lot of people say Mario was a flop and not GT6.

Either way theyre both doing fine and most likely people saying otherwise has some kind of agenda. No big deal, ignore them and move on. Both are good games and both are selling fine. Will they sell the most in the franchise? Prob not but who cares as long as theyre still successful.

It's not a double standard at all because they're completely distinct situations. A double standard is when 2 similar things are treated completely differently.

On the subject of GT6, there's always a dip in sales when we're in the middle of a console transition. The people with the old consoles aren't as eager to buy (especially when they won't work on the next consoles) and a lot of people are waiting a while before enough good games are available to justify buying a new console.

With Mario, it's completely different. There are hardly any WiiU owners so it's very good news. What's more, mario 3d world is gonna have a very long shelf life. The 3D mario games are kind of the games that, for the next 5 years, most people who buy the console will ensure they get hold of.

Just saying. People are quick to critique and cut down the sales numbers of Gran Turismo 6; saying that it's a flop or the series is done. On the other hand, everyone seems to be positive about 3D world's sales saying the legs are great and it's selling great for Wii U.

Install base or not, the fact of the matter is Mario is MORE popular than Gran Turismo. The fact that GT6 is handily outselling it at 1.55 mil compared to 1.31 of 3D world just shows a double standard with the two games.

Thoughts?

*DIsclaimer* try NOT to to bring up game quality into this discussion. We all know that GT6 isn't much different from previous GT and that 3D is a fanstatic game that is unlike any other main Mario installment (except the obvious 3D land on 3DS)

You're right. 3D World is selling badly compared to Mario Galaxy and so on. Reason is naturally, that the WiiU is a sales-failure like Vita, Gamecube and Dreamcast.
