If I'm referring to the start, then yes. Iwata himself said that they learned their lesson and just brought out more 3rd party games which is what exactly happened with the 3DS. Everything beside Nindogs and Pi'llotwings was third party. Then there is the point that 3DS is pretty much the only relevant system in its market, while Wii U isn't.

Do you think that Nintendo won't look at 160k Worldwide shipments and think, "Hmm... maybe we are screwing up everything somewhere around here..."?

I could almost agree to that as Iwata's promises mostly seem to float down the river without any thought... recently.

The funny thing with your last statement is that  Iwata also said that they have learned their lesson with the delays and then they continue to delay.

But hey, I don't dislike Iwata. I really like him and while the Wii U is a screw up right now, does it mean it always will be? That is something we will have to see and I'm glad Nintendo is trying to at least put their software on the system for the rest of the year. That alone show that they are thinking of them screwing up. Sadly their manpower won't allow the problem to be solved completely for a while.

And I get banned for calling The Last of Us a film... but calling the Wii U low sales justice seems to be no problem at all, right mods?

Whats your point? that comment about TLOU was clearly bannable, NintendoPie has justified his comments.

They're not going to get rid of Iwata. The way the company and shareholding is structured, a revolution is highly impossible.

Iwata could be forced aside, but it would be by someone very similar from the Board of Directors (like the guy who used to be President of NoA who they brought back to Japan, possibly for the purpose of being ready to move in if Iwata is forced out)

Are you saying that, if at all possible, kicking Iwata out of the CEO seat would be a good thing?

Edit: I feel as though they definitely need to do something, if kicking Iwata out is not the answer.

I wouldn't call it a failure until we see sales for 2014 cause that's when 2 huge exclusives will release. If the WiiU continues to sell badly then it will be called a failure.

I'm saying it is irrelevant. Nintendo is not like Sony, who is more vulnerable to the pressures of international stockholders whereby a large-scale shakeup of the company's leadership due to negative business is possible. Short of large-scale embezzlement or them getting indicted for holding a bunch of twelve-year-olds in their basement or something, there will NEVER be a large-scale shakeup on Nintendo's board.

For better or worse, the company's leadership is quite insulated from pressure of any sort.

We will in a world where the fittest survive, and the weak die out. With more competition, games get better because the standard goes higher, and people who can't keep up drop out.

In the late 80's and early 90's, Nintendo's games were a step above everyone elses. They were the best, and the sold the best, simple as that.

However, like many Japanese companies, seniority is given too much power. Old devs who ran out of ideas a long time ago, are still leading big projects, despite newer devs being more capable. So as a result, Nintendo games have started to become the same, rehashed, redone. Mario is Mario, Zelda is Zelda, and Nintendo continues to heavily rely on old old IP's.

Nintendo deserves poor sales with the Wii U because they just brought the standard down too much. Every console prior to the Wii U launched with at least 1 AMAZING game, often times 2 or 3 great ones too. Wii has Twilight Princess and Wii Sports, GCN had Smash Bros, Pikmin, and Luigi's Mansion, N64 had Super Mario 64, and the list goes on... Wii U had nothing, what else did they expect? They deserve poor sales because they didn't deliver a product worth buying

When more games release for Wii U, I'm sure sales will jump. However Sony and MS have taken this opportunity to attack as well, and PS4/One will release strong and hard.

Nintendo made mistakes with the Wii U, they deserve poor sales, but they can redeem themselves. Altus developing SMT x Fire Emblem, Namco making Smash Bros., Monolith Soft making a AAA JRPG exclusive, and publishing all of Platinum Games exclusives are clear signs that Nintendo might be changing to meet that higher standard gamers expect today. I hope Nintendo does more of this, Retro Studios developing Metroid Prime was one of the best decisions they made in recent years, and Monolith Soft/Platinum Games are also great studios. Nintendo needs to give more projects to the new guys, and I think they will.

From a doom perspective, I'd have preferred 10x the Wii U sales but a reported loss. Every quarter they post profit, accounting trick or inflation or whatever, is another quarter Iwata stays President.

I don't think there are many tricks.  Nintendo just isn't selling either of their system at a loss, but rather, a profit.  They might need to change that philosophy with the Wii U if software alone doesn't turn the ship around.

1. Wii U is definitely being sold at a loss, because they haven't announced it's being sold at a profit yet

2. Someone on neogaf said the accounting trick is to repatriate a ton of cash from EU and NA, pay huge tax on it in Japan (bad), but it looks like profit. And that Sony keeps money abroad and untaxed because that's actually better.

160k for the past quarter may be a shocking number, but it's not enough to put an end to the denial. Just like the blind Wii U fans, Nintendo isn't ready to admit the full scope of their mistakes just yet. There is still the upcoming lineup as well as a price cut. Only once those things fail will reality settle in and hopefully then Nintendo draws the right conclusions from their blatant errors with the Wii U.

If I'm drawing correct conclusions, it seems you think their line-up of games this Holiday won't work. Correct?

They've definitely come too late, and may be less of an impact because of that, but I think they'll do something. Though a jump back like the 3DS had doesn't seem possible. Even with those games.

Edit: I also think that maybe Nintendo feels as though their Holiday line up will make up for these bad 160k shipment moments. So they are most likely in denial, I agree.

Nintendo messed up the software and in my personal opinion the controller itself. its to big and awkward and playing on one made me not buy it. i still intend to get one but I'm really hoping a controller re-design is coming

Truth be told, I am actually happy with what the Wii U's sales have been. The 160'000 figure that was reported by Nintendo opened my eyes to just how bad the situation is, and I'm happy about.

Nintendo clearly messed up with their Wii U and they are deserving of having a horrible time with the console. Maybe not deserving of extremely bad luck, but bad sales are surely useful to teach them that maybe they should think before they go off and build another console. Because they obviously didn't think long and hard enough about this one. The Gamepad is too expensive, the name was awkward at first, the games haven't been available at all, the OS was extremely slow until they had you download and update (which didn't come until a few months after launch, to my knowledge.), etc.

Hopefully Nintendo doesn't drop the ball on their next console, because I do believe they'll have another. Just maybe not one as badly planed out as this one has so far.

Anyhow, what are your feelings on the Wii U's failure? Does Nintendo need to see how bad they are doing before they get better? I sure think so, but I want to hear your opinions as well. (Also, try to have an explanation for both sides. It opens up more discussion.)

You prefer Wii U had; no gamepad, a catchy name, a steady flow of games, and a fast OS from the start. An HD Triplet. Regular game releases is asking too much from a single publisher. Do you want a 8 core cpu and 8gb ram?
