so are the 3m they sold, sold to customers or just shipped to retailers?

Shipped.

There will be no Pricecut!

...until we figured out what features we can drop to make it cheaper

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

"However, given that it has now become clear that we have not yet fully communicated the value of our product..."

Ok, that quote pisses me off. Does Nintendo really think a successful console is based on just "communicating" the system's worth? Well no wonder the 3DS and now Wii U have struggled so hard out of the gate then. Talk is worth nothing. We need actual software that demonstrates, not just communicates, the system's value. Geez I'm a Nintendo diehard, but if that's the attitude they're taking they're leading it to failure. Nothing they can say will make people get it if there aren't good enough games. And this 6 month 2013 drought us early adopters are now looking at is very irritating to go through again, and very few new adopters are gonna come on board during it.

It's not smart to show your hand so early, before knowing what the competition is doing, it could leave you in a ditch without room to move.

- Nintendo surely knew there'd be few games releasing after launch, they can only wait it out.
- A pricecut with games releasing spring-summer won't be as effective as the fall lineup.
- We still have to see those two Gamepad games releasing this year.

No, he's right about communicating the value of the product.  The thing about his wording is that it isn't precisely about its direct "worth" but he's more saying that he needs to communicate to others why should they get X or Y system.  One of the things that was paired up with his wording of communicating the value of their product was the release of more software.

They could cut the price but it wouldn't do much. Wii U's biggest problem is the lack of upcoming games. We need more games!

I wouldn't say the word "upcoming" here as they do have a fair share of upcoming games.  Upcoming games don't tend to sell systems anyway, it's more about the games that are already out, which really nothing notable on the Wii U came out since last month.

For those saying this is the same as the 3DS, it isn't. 3DS was launched at a price that was too high, with Nintendo making a tidy profit on each console i.e. they were being greedy. They were then forced into a situation where they had to drop the price to an extent that they were then losing money on every console sold.

That's not called being greedy when you want to make a profit on something you sell.

Then 'greedy' if you prefer.  My point being that Nintendo's claim that it has learned something from the 3DS launch is backed up by their different approach to pricing the WiiU from the outset.

Why do people always act like Pikmin can't sell systems but Metroid can? Just wondering...both sell relatively low but both can still help sell systems. Library's sell systems not individual games. Some may have more weight than others but still...

I will say this again. No one will buy a $300 system for 1 or 2 games.

I will also say this again. No one will pay $300 for a Wii U because of Black Ops 2, Assassins Creed 3, Just Dance 4, Mass Effect 3, or Batman. Yes, they are pretty good games, and yes they sell well. No one is going to buy a Wii U to play them when they already can on their PS3, 360, or Wii. It makes zero since. It is great for the people who bought a Wii U for Nintendo's 1st party games, now they can buy the Wii U versions of these games. No one will buy a system specifically for them though...

If you're already taking a loss on every console sold, the absolute worst thing you can do is make a price cut and further erode your bottom line. This move would literally destroy any chance of profits in the next year or more. Their goal is to make $1 billion profit this coming year, so taking further losses on hardware is not an option. Releasing ten huge 3DS games and five or six huge Wii U games this year and improving hardware sales with software support rather than a price cut is definitely the better way to go.
