Staying silent is not an option for Nintendo, and staying silent until E3 is definitely not an option..
If Sony/MS are launching this year, then you can guarantee that E3 will be jam packed on launch and future game titles... what with the hardware itself, next gen games should create quite a lot of buzz from gamers. Even if Nintendo have a Zelda to talk about at E3, its going to get totally overshadowed by the money/PR/Advertising MS/Sony will throw at E3.
I really believe Nintendo are in for a very difficult year.

They have their 5.5 million target for end of March, which they likely will miss by a country mile, so that shouldn't be too much of an issue, lol.
I don't think they're like sitting on a finished Mario Kart U and not releasing it just because they want it for the holidays or something.
They likely had to move Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 and Made In Wario out of Q1 because that was overkill for Q1 anyway, but also because they probably realized they had a weaker Q2 than they thought. Maybe they were banking on something like GTAV showing up and got rebuffed by Rockstar.

That was when people started to care about 360. But the system had still sold over 5 million by that time and Wii U will do the same, because early adopters don't care. 50k unit sales weeks suck, no question, but it doesn't matter much in the long run. Nintendo will launch some impressive games this fall and do a marketing blitz and with competitors now being more expensive sales will probably take off. And Kitler isn't the target market of WiiU, and isn't who Nintendo needs to win over. He loves his Sony products, so converting him would be tough. He has also stated he is more than willing to pay a high premium for a product he desires. This is not Nintendo's market because they make affordable products. Nintendo's success depends largely on those consumers who compare price as a significant factor before making a purchase. Nintendo neeeds to win over the mass market with an appealing product at a good price. Those people probably don't care about any trailers at E3, but games that are on shelves or coming soon. |
good post.

It is a stupid move regardless of what kind of consumer you want to attract. A delivery would still equal a punch, so there's no harm in knowing about a game 9-18 months before its release. When the PS4 and Nextbox launch, the market will compare them to a one year old Wii U, not the launch Wii U. In November 2006 Microsoft succeeded against Sony by having Gears of War on their console; the best looking console game to date was on the 360, not the much more expensive PS3. Both HD consoles sold at a slow rate, but Microsoft was winning big in that niche back then, because it wasn't expected that they could actually compete in sales with Sony. Nintendo won't have the best looking console game in November 2013, but they can still have must-have games while Microsoft and Sony will likely launch with so-so games. This is what Nintendo has to work towards for the PS4 and Nextbox launches, that they get some must-have games out there. But in the here and now it's about giving reasons why people should buy the Wii U on its own, rather than over its future competition. Nintendo isn't doing themselves any favor by giving people the impression that there definitely won't be another big Nintendo game until fall. If Nintendo intends to not start this generation until Microsoft's and Sony's consoles arrive, then people will find it very easy to wait until then. |
But when it does arrive, the choice would be easy, because it would be released games (for U) versus announced games (for PS720).
What you're sayin' and what I'm sayin' are one and the same (e.g. to have must-haves ready for PS720 launch), I'm just asking if being secretive about it, though it may hurt 2013 sales, wouldn't be more powerful a strategy come the launch of the PS720.
You're saying it doesn't hurt to know, I'm saying it hurts to not know (I was conceding), but was thinking maybe it would pay off come release.
If they wanted to make us excited then they should hint at these games. Keeping these ideas locked up in their brains isn't helping anyone. (Especially sales.)
I hope this E3 will be better than last year. (PLEASE!!!)

Only two posts into the thread and somebody brings up a competitor. I wish this forum wasn't like this. Everything always has to be in the context of Nintendo fighting Microsoft fighting Sony. |
Why are you that sensitive to it? Its a similar situation, i was stating that unlike Sony, Nintendo has conditions to revert the situation. Why does it always have to be console/fanboy wars?
I want to get a Vita a PS3 and a Wii U this year. None of this stops me from beeing critical to all companies.

Remember how DKCR was revealed like 4 months before launch or something. Did that make us more or less excited? I don't know about you but I personally don't like waiting for games, but for some people that might just be their thing, they love the hype and buildup. idk.

4 Months is to late for how much they need this hype. If they are going to release a new Zelda or Metroid (or whatever) then they must build the hype. Putting rumors out there will build the hype. E3 would be a perfect place to announce this. Reggie should bring back the, "One more thing..."

The big thing is, MS and Sony will have games for launch obviously... , we know 3rd parties will be working for titles on launch, and then there will be games that will be teased. Thats ALOT for people to think about.
The difference is that there will be 2 console companies pushing very hard to get people to buy their console and 3rd parties will be doing the same (because they know they probably wont sell many games on the Wii-U)... Thats alot pushing for a Sony/MS buy, compared to at the moment, Nintendo. So Nintendo *might* have games by the end of the year, but they are going to have to be big hitters to compete with three parties all pushing for next gen. It doesnt help Nintendo that there will also be the cheaper current gen consoles still getting releases and selling at a cheaper rate.
