Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo is silent for a reason

Am I wrong in saying the Metroid series is quite damaged nowadays and Zelda will have to be something really special?...the impression I get is Skyward Sword left a big 'meh' impression on gamers.

Skyward Sword was beloved. Smaller sales can have anything to do between Wii fatigue and the motion plus requirement. People who played it and weren't biased against motion controls tended to love it.

Metroid, possibly. Although we forget that Metroid has always, always been low key. The "meh" sales of Skyward Sword are better than the best Metroid has ever done, with Prime and the original NES game about tied.

I think that Metroid could become one of Nintendo's Flagship series. They just need to push it more. Make it seem like something that they are really proud, then it should catch on.

It's impossible to do without undermining what makes Metroid, metroid. Look at the other side of the Metroidvania coin: Castlevania. Castlevania didn't get big until they made Lords of Shadow, which was more Bionic Commando than Castlevania. We could get something big, but it would be Metroid in name only at best.

That's not a comparable situation. By 2010 the Wii already had enough big games released for people to buy the system, so there wasn't any urgency to announce games a year or more in advance. Also, by 2010 third parties at large had already made up their minds that they wouldn't support the Wii with quality games and none of Nintendo's actions would have had any influence on their decision.

But is it, really, any different now? Though I'll be the first to agree that if Nintendo is trying to capture 3rd parties into their success, then reducing their confidence over 2013 is a bad idea, but then the boost they would get from a Nov 2010-like performance would be strong. Maybe here is a case where you have more faith in 3rd parties than I do. Maybe I'm wrong.

With that optic in mind, I agree that a drought is a very bad idea and Nintendo should start churning the hype. With the pessimistic optic (3rd parties won't help regardless), probs the Nov 2010 approach is the way to go.

I don't doubt that Nintendo is working on a few things, but didn't people say the same thing about the 3DS's 2nd half of 2012? People were waiting for games and Nintendo's silence ended up being due to them having nothing to release. I hope things will be different this time around, but I wouldn't get too hyped just yet.

I don't agree.

I think Metroid could make it as a big title while staying the same. It has the locales, it has the graphics, it has the aliens, and it is pretty interesting. All they need to do is shove it down people's throats that they must buy the game.

Have you ever seen a big marketing push for a Metroid game? (Other than the originals.)

I think Nintendo got afraid to hype the games in advance - like they did with 3DS (Luigi`s Mansion, Kid Icarus, for example).
In 2007, Nintendo released some big games for Wii: Mario Party 8, Wii Fit, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Super Paper Mario, Mario Strikers Charged and Metroid Prime 3.

So far, the biggest titles are Pikmin 3 and Lego City. Here`s hoping the next Nintendo Direct announces some big titles like Splinter Cell and GTA V.

Let`s see what Nintendo has in store for this year. But given it will have to compete with one or two new consoles, it will need some big titles.

Isn't Bayonetta 2 expected to release this year? There's The Wonderful 101 and Rayman Legends as well. They're sure to announce a few big hitters at E3 as well.

I don't have faith in third parties. They already made it clear that they aren't really interested in the Wii U, but a solid year 2013 would at least keep the chance for support in the coming years alive. On the other hand, a bad 2013 will make it definite that Nintendo will be ignored once again.

Fair point.

Having said that, 3rd party devs on Nintendo platforms are finicky. It's no point ruining a possibly sound strategy if it's to make sure they don't run away. Did they run away when the PS2 had few 1st party games on launch? When the 360 had few must-have 1st party games on launch? No, they didn't. They made those platforms their havens.

I think Nintendo's being TOO secretive and that it's hurting them. They should at least show us ONE game that takes advantage of the graphical power of the Wii U. A hint, a tease, something to get us hyped and psyched about. Nintendo needs to learn how to build momentum.

NSMBU and NintendoLand is a great start, but they have to show us something else. Those games probably have good legs - NSMBU certainly will have - and that's because people aren't rushing out to buy the Wii U just for those games; they're complementary games you get along side other games.

I agree with you here. If Nintendo showed just a little teaser of a graphically impressive game we wouldn't have so many people claiming that the Wii U is underpowered.

Agree. But, is it underpowered or not? My friends are telling me it is worst than PS3 and Xbox360, someone have some info that prove it is not the case?

Do you have a WIIU? Is it better than your PS3/Xbox360. Please, shed a light on this.
