It's impossible to do without undermining what makes Metroid, metroid. Look at the other side of the Metroidvania coin: Castlevania. Castlevania didn't get big until they made Lords of Shadow, which was more Bionic Commando than Castlevania. We could get something big, but it would be Metroid in name only at best.
