It is a stupid move regardless of what kind of consumer you want to attract. A delivery would still equal a punch, so there's no harm in knowing about a game 9-18 months before its release. When the PS4 and Nextbox launch, the market will compare them to a one year old Wii U, not the launch Wii U. In November 2006 Microsoft succeeded against Sony by having Gears of War on their console; the best looking console game to date was on the 360, not the much more expensive PS3. Both HD consoles sold at a slow rate, but Microsoft was winning big in that niche back then, because it wasn't expected that they could actually compete in sales with Sony. Nintendo won't have the best looking console game in November 2013, but they can still have must-have games while Microsoft and Sony will likely launch with so-so games. This is what Nintendo has to work towards for the PS4 and Nextbox launches, that they get some must-have games out there. But in the here and now it's about giving reasons why people should buy the Wii U on its own, rather than over its future competition. Nintendo isn't doing themselves any favor by giving people the impression that there definitely won't be another big Nintendo game until fall. If Nintendo intends to not start this generation until Microsoft's and Sony's consoles arrive, then people will find it very easy to wait until then. |
But when it does arrive, the choice would be easy, because it would be released games (for U) versus announced games (for PS720).
What you're sayin' and what I'm sayin' are one and the same (e.g. to have must-haves ready for PS720 launch), I'm just asking if being secretive about it, though it may hurt 2013 sales, wouldn't be more powerful a strategy come the launch of the PS720.
You're saying it doesn't hurt to know, I'm saying it hurts to not know (I was conceding), but was thinking maybe it would pay off come release.
