Would a GCN2 sell?

GCN2 would be awesome, I would be getting it without a doubt, but they would have to change the style and colour!! I remember back in the day I could only get one console and I remember that for some time I was hesitating which one to choose, PS2 or X-box. These were the only consoles I was interested in, cause DC was already dead and once I saw GCN I didn't even want to know anything about the system. I just ignored it totally, didn't care about what they games were released on it, didn't know the price, anything. I totally ejected it out of the quation upon seeing the colour of the console. I was a teenager. Wanted a cool console, not... I don't even know how to comment that colour. They must have been smoking some sick stuff when they approved it. And the disgusting colours on the controller... I wonder how many millions of $ has the choice of colour of the console and cotroller cost them.

So when it comes to me, I'm going to get Wii U once it hits the $150 price tag only for a couple of Nintendo 1st party games, I'll probably buy them used or discounted. I would get a GCN2 much, much earlier and buy much more games for it.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

Also, can we PLEASE stop saying Nintendo is for kids.

Nintendo isn't, but Gamecube certainly was. The console was shaped like a Purple Lunchbox and had a Fisher Price controller. Plus the flagship games were a weekday afternoon cartoon version of Celda, and Mario with a squirt-gun.

The Gamecube was the most adult focused nintendo console of all time. First of all, Wind Waker is ten times the game that Twilight Princess is. Aesthetic isn't everything. Secondly, METROID FU**ING PRIME. The Gamecube had F-Zero, two excellent Metroid games, a fantastic Zelda game, decent third party, eternal darkness, a controller that didn't require you to waggle..

Your crazy if you think the gamecube was for kids. The Wii was for kids.

Gamecube was PS2 for kids, that's exactly how it was presented and marketed. Why else would they design it to look like a purple lunch box with a Fisher Price-like controller? Truth is, everyone knew the Gamecube was for kids, that's why only kids bought it. The fact that those kids grew up afterwards is simple biology.

Arguing that Gamecube wasn't for kids is like arguing that My Little Pony isn't for kids.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Depends largely on the games and timing. If Gamecube had been lauched a year earlier, it likely had been atleast twice as successful. It had good third party support at lauch, but by time it lauched, there really wasn't any competition as the winner was already clear, so the support dried up instantly. GC had the worst 1st party games on a Nintendo console ever, so looking at games perspective (no 3rd party, sub-par 1st party), it would definately fail.

Only if they change up the design. If I was a 13 year old I wouldn't be caught dead with a "cute" design system like that. If I was an adult I would say it belonged to one of my kids.

Nintendo isnt about satisfying adults themelves, its mainly marketed towards kids and families. If you dont like have liked what Nintendo has offered for years, it really shouldn't matter what the console looks like.

Nintendo is about satisfying the people who enjoy their games, whether it be adults or kids.

Thats vague, I'll stick with Iwata and Miyamotos words (which are far more accurate when you look at sales), thanks. :)

So, the two of you are saying the same thing and arguing over who's right?

Secondly, don't you think you're cherry picking here a little, as I'd recall Nintendo publishing games like Brain Training and the Wii series, with the target group being adults. If you really want to "satisfy the people who enjoy their games, whether it be adults or kids", you really need to have a product that satisfy said people. So far Nintendo seems to have been the most successful doing it (which is proven by sales).

Having a 150m userbase to a (max) of 90m is bad no matter how you look at it. Especially considering during that gen Sony had the exact same competition as this gen (Nintendo and MS), it wasn't like a "lone wolf" or anything.

And the most alarming thing for PS-brand is, that they lost a huge amount of people expected to stick with the brand, along with multiple console ownerships, MS and Nintendo were able to improve their brand.

Nintendo has never made an adult focused console, ever. They might have had mature games on the console, but never have they made a console with adults in mind. In fact adults were the main people who never took videogames seriously when Nintendo was on top.

You know, saying that adults didn't take videogames seriously when Nintendo was on top, without saying they didn't do it before and haven't done ever since, makes your argument hold only rhetorical value.

If I understand correctly.

If Nintendo used the GameCube strategy of; being just like the competition in every way with the bonus of exclusive content. Then I believe.... NO!!

The best thing about Nintendo is they innovate. Sony can't, AT ALL, so they copy and tweak. It worked for Sony because they knew what's "Cool" and what's not. Nintendo would need to go full-out ULTRA 64 style for that strategy to work.

Besides, they would rather use their imagination than compete in the expensive graphics arena.

But the Gamecube produced some excellent games, much better games than it's "innovative" succesor. Gimmicks don't make excellent games.

I want excellent games too and I would love to see Nintendo graphical route (along side brutally mature content).  But how are we measuring the system's success?  The dreamcast proved that great games with great graphics don't guarantee market dominance or survival.  Clearly you have two avenues to succeed: Xbox route is to beat Sony at Thier own game(who's coolest): Wii route is be yourself be different.

But just thinking about it i Really want now for Nintendo to show us some GameCube style games.  It's just hard to predict that kinda success.

I think some of the arguments on here are a bit dumb. Just because the Gamecube had a purple color is irrelevant. It launched in a bunch of other colors and to be honest, I think it was the second most appealing out of its generation. I find no problem with the Gamecube controllers ergonomics. It fit perfectly in the hand, plus those awesome triggers that fit like a glove on your finger. The real problem with the Gamecube was, it launched to long after the PS2 and it wasn't a DVD player.

I think if Nintendo made a Gamecube 2, they should make it look more futuristic and keep the controller just add in the modern stuff(regular,a,b,x,y, clickable full size analog sticks, 2 bumpers, analog triggers but keep the shape of the ones on the gamecube). I don't think that it would be owned like it did with the PS2 because the PS brand isn't as strong as it was 7-9 years ago.

You are 100% right. I remember seeing it once in a newspaper and never wanting to see it again. It looked so childish. Anyone who thinks this wasn't a problem for Nintendo is just fooling himself. The system shouted out laud that it was for kids. Like I said, I didn't even want to know what games were on this console, so arguing that it had serious games is pointless. I saw it and couldn't care less. I wanted a cool console, not something that would make all my friends laught at me. Remember that at that time teenagers were the biggest market for games. And teenagers didn't appreciate this style, they wouldn't do it today either. If the silver and a black version were marketed as the main ones and the purple one was a limited edition, GCN would sell much more.

More power and a heap of 3rd party support and they could have another winner.

GC as the Xbox was probably a year to late ..that and the design just wasnt for the masses..

so with the right desing and timing I say it would succed and obviously it would be cheaper then others..

There were more problems with it's design too; even if the cube-shape looked good, along with the top-loading DVD-drive, the shape was impractical. If you had your console in a cabinet under your TV, changing the game disc was uncomfortable. And the controller wires are 50cm too short.
